To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wnnnm Rromao Bmzmzr, of J acksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Electrode-Holders; and I do ereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it up ertains to make and use the same.
y object is to provide improved means for removing the connector straps of a battery by' an electric current thus avoiding the necessity for drilling the straps. For this purpose I rovide a sim le and inexpensive electro e holder capa le of ready adjustment.
n the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the entire mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan of one of the electrode holders.
I have shown a air of carbon electrodes 1 mounted in two olders 2. These holders consist of a pair of plates 3 having sleeves 4 near their ed s to receive the carbons 1. An asbestos bus ing 5 is set in each of the sleeves to directly contact with the carbon electrodes. By means of porcelain tipped set screws 6 the electrodes are held adjusted in the desired positions.
Each of the plates 3 is rabbeted'as at 7 to receive the other plate and they are slotted, as at 8. A bolt 9 extends through the slots and carries a washer 10 which spans the slot in the upper plate. This bolt is threaded at its lower end to receive a wing nut 12. By loosening the nut the lates may be to each ot or to separate the two electro es to the desired extent.
Depending from the bolt 9 is a chain or wire 13 WhlOh carries a pair of tongs 14 having toothed jaws 15. spring 16 tends to hold the jaws open.
The device is equipped with an upri ht rod 17 secured to the upper plate 3. 'Iln's rod is provided with an asbestos shield 18 and its outer extremity constitutes a handle '19. The handle is formed with an outer rip portion 20 preferably of wood and med with asbestos.
From a source of electric energy 21 the conductor wires 22 supply current of low voltage (six to twenty four volts) to the electrodes. The wires are shown passing through the handle and connected with the electrodes by copper clamps 23.
When the electrodes are placed on the lead connector straps the circuit is completed and the resistance of the carbon causes the electrodes to quickly attain a white heat. By pressing upon the handle the electrodes melt the connector straps. The tongs 14 are secured to the battery plates or the jars or covers and as the device is quickl {irked away the plates or other parts w l withdrawn from the battery. By means of the adjustable features the device may be used on any make of battery. I provide a range of adjustment of the electrodes from one and a half to seven inches so that the may readily correspond to the ositions o the cell posts.
