To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN WILLIAM in water-heaters and to that class'of appara tus which can be used to supply alternatively either a small quantity of boiling water in a short time or a larger quantity of hot water, suitable, say, for a bath, in a longer ,time, say, twenty minutes or half an hour.
Accordingto the invention my improved apparatus comprises a casing the upper part of which is divided off as a water container by a partition which is of an inverted conical shape, that is to say, with the apex directed downward, and located beneath the said partitions, a correspondingly shaped boiler, that is to say, a boiler the shell of which is of less diameter or width than the interior of the casing and which is of an inverted conical shape or V-shaped in verti-' cal section, a space being provided between the partition and the upper surfaces of the boiler which communicates at its center with a central vertical flue. The gases of combustion, therefore, from the gas burners below the boiler, impinge on the underside of the latter, pass up the inclined outer surface thereof and by reason of the inclination of the said surface tend to cling thereto and so to give up a greater quantity of their heat, and then enter the downwardly directed passage between the partitions and boiler, the inclination of which passage again causes the said gases to tend to cling to the heating surfaces, before finally escaping through the central flue. To increase the aforesaid clinging tendency of the'gases to the surface of the boiler and partition I may provide the said surfaces with protuberances, preferably in the form of studs, which check the flow.
The water container is formed with a downward annular extension below the par tition and the cold supply water is fed into this extension and thence supplied by a pipe 'to the bottom of the boiler. Y
The hot water from the boiler rises through a pipe which extends partly up through the water in the container and terminates in a back-pressure valve. From the bottom of the boiler a branch pipe extends to one passageof a two-way valve the other passage of which is in communication with a pipe within the container which extends upward nearly to the water level. By this means by turning the plug of the valve elther a small quantity of boiling water may be obtained quickly directly from the boiler or a larger quantity of hot water more slowly from the container as may be required.
By reason of the inverted conical shape of the partition any water of condensation deposited upon the cold or cool surfaces will collect at the lowest point or apex from which it will drip on to the upper surfaces of the boiler shell where itwill be re-vaporized and so escape through the flue. A drain pipe for water of condensation is therefore not required.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a water heater constructed according to the invenion.

In indicates the boiler which, as above described, is of an inverted conical shape in vertical section and is secured in thelower compartment d of the casing a in a position fsurface o-fthe said boiler and the under surface of the conical partition I).
The boiler may be corrugated, as is shown in Fig. 1, in the case of the under'surface, or provided with any other convenient form of protuberance or the like for the pur e of partially arresting the gases of com ustion from the gas burner m located beneath the said boiler, as above described.

The two-way delivery valve 1- may be of any suitable construction, and that which is shown in the drawing and in detail in Fig. 3 has been found a suitable construction which gives good results in practice. It comprises the conical casing t having lateral openings t into which open respectively the passages t t in communication respectively with the pipes g and s. The conical casing 25 also receives the hollow plug it which is'provided with a port a and with an external handle '0 by means of which-it can be turned so as to bring the said port u and-thereby the interior ofthe plug in communication with either of the passages t and t The apparatus operates as follows, that is to say, the water in the boiler is heated by means ofthe flames from the gas burner m in the usual way, the shape and arrangement of the boiler and adjacent part being such as to cause the gases of combustion tomake good and eflicient contact with the surfaces of the boiler. The said gases pass upward in contact with the conicalbottom of the boiler is and thence into the downwardly extending the passage or space Z, whence they escape through the central flue j, the arrows I in Fig. 1 indicating the direction of flow.
The water in the boiler heated by the gases then rises through the uptake pipe 0 and passes the'valve ;0 into the chamber 0, this 'latter water being consequently gradually heated by conduction.

To facilitate theignition of the gas burners which may present some difliculty in view of the relatively large diameter of the casing, I advantageously make use of a pilot-light which is swiveled to the casing so that it can be'turned outward for ignit 1on and then swung inward to serve for lighting the main burners.

In a water heater of the kind herein referred to, a casing divided by an inverted conical partition into an upper water container and a lower heating chamber, the water container being extended downward peripherally below the level of the partition, an inverted conical boiler provided with a water inlet and with an up-take pipe extendwith anon-return valve and atwo-way'dis charge or delivery valve in communication respectively with the water in the water container and with that in the boiler, substantially as herein described.
