Description

FRIEDRICH OLSEN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
DETONATING OR DISRUPTIVE EXPLOSIV'E.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIGH OLSEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented an Improvement in Detonating or Disruptive Explosives, of which the following is a specification.
' The subject of thls invention is a detonating or disruptive explosive intended for use in blasting and for like purposes.
There are times, especially at the termination of a war when large quantities of certain materials, such as nitro-starch ex losives and propellent powders (smoke ess powders and cordite) are on hand which are subject to more or less rapid deterioration and, consequently, can not be stored away for 'future use, and which have no commercial field or value and consequently can not readily be disposed of.
The main 0 jectof the present invention is, therefore, the conversion of such materials into useful commercial roducts so that the same, instead-of being 0 assed as waste may be readily disposed of and converted to commercial uses.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination of ingredients hereinafter described and claimed, it bein understood that changes inthe precise em bodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within-the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In carrying out my invention I take the Well known nit'ro-starch explosives (Trojan grenade explosives, Trojan trench mortar shell explosives or grenite) and mix it with a propellent powder such as smokeless powder or cordite in the proportions, 10 to 90 parts of nitro-starch explosives to 90 to 10 parts propellent powder.
In preparin the smokeless owder I prea degree of fineness that 100% will pass through a standard. 20 mesh sieve, and at least through a 50 mesh sieve. While this grinding is desirable and more satisfactoryre- Specification of Letters Patent.

sults are obtained thereby, it is not absolutely essential.
The nitro-starch explosives mentioned are usually composed of nitro-starch, and an inorganic nitrate as ammonium or sodium nitrate, 'a carbonaceous substance, for in stance charcoal and a stabilizer or anti-acid, as diphenylamin. I
Instead of nitro-starch explosives nitrostarch may be used and mixed with the propellent tioned.
From the foregoing it will be evident that a field for the disposal of large quantities of nitro-starch explosives and ropellent powders is provided, thus avoiding the waste due to deterioration of the nitrostarch explosives which is rather rapid because of its absorption of moisture.
powders in the proportions men- Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The herein described composition of matter, containing a nitro-starch explosive and a ro ellent powder.
2. Tile erein described composition of matter, containing a propellent powder, a nitro-starch, an inorganic nitrate, a carboniaceous material, and a Stabilizer or antiaci 3. The herein described composition of matter, containing a propellent powder, nitro-starch, an inorganic nitrate, and a carbonaceous material.
4. The herein described composition of matter, containing a propellent powder, ni-
tro-starch, an inorganic nitrate and a stabilizer or anti-acid.
5. The herein described composition of matter, containing a propellent powder, nitro-starch, and an inorganic nitrate. v
6. The herein described composition-of matter containing a ropellent powder, nitro starch, and a stabi izer or anti-acid.
'7. The herein described composition of matter containing a propellent powder and nitro-starch.
. FRIEDRICH OLSEN.
