CHARLES DOYLE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DENTIFRICE-DISPENSING DEVICE.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application 'led January 28, 1921. Serial No. 440,792.
To all fr/fom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES DOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofSan Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dentifrice-Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in a device for dispensing tooth paste and the like wherein dispensing means operate in in conjunction with brush engaging means to dispense paste onto a brush when the brush is Withdrawn for use.
The primary object of my invention is to provide improved means for facilitating the dispensing of tooth paste and the like onto a brush. i
Another object is to provide an improved tooth brush retainer arranged to dispense tooth paste to a brush when withdrawn therefrom.
A further object is to provide improved means for controlling the dispensing of tooth paste from a dispensing container of the character described.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout said specification and drawings and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a broken front elevation of the device disclosed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 in the direction indicated.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken detail of the plunger operating means, the section being taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, in the direction indicated.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged broken section taken at the line 5 5 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate in general a housing open at the bottom and closed at the top thereof, and provided bracket 2 whereby1 the housing 1 may be secured upon a wall. A receptacle 3 provided with an outlet vent 6 is removably secured in the housing 1 by any suitable means such with a suitable as the thumb screw 7 disclosed in the drawings. The bottom of the receptacle 3 is closed by a cap 5 threaded thereonto.
Slidably mountedwithin the receptacle 3 I have provided a plunger S'provided with a stem 9 extending outwardly through the bottom of the receptacle, through an aperture 11 provided in the cap 5. Ratchet teeth 12 are formed upon the' stem 9 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
A tube 14 provided with a longitudinal slot 16 is threaded onto an extension 17 provided on the cap 5 to surround the out- Wardly extending portion of the stem 9 as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The outer surface of the tube 14 is threaded to receive a nut 18 arranged to regulate the movement of the plunger 8 as hereafter described.
A brush engaging member 21 provided with spring clips 22 inwardly turned to grip the body portion of a tooth brush 24, is provided with a bearing portion 26 arranged to be slidably mounted upon the upper portion of the tube 14. A pawl 27 is operatively mounted upon the member 21 adjacent the bearing portion 2G in such a manner that the ratchet engaging portion of the pawl 27 will extend through the slot 16 in tube 14 to engage the ratchet teeth of the stem 9. A spring 28 is provided to retain the pawl 27 in engagement with the teeth 12.
A slide 29 is mounted upon the memyloer 21 to normally close the outlet vent 6.
The brush engaging member 21 is normally retained in the position disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings with the bearing portion of the member 21 at its uppermost limit of movement as defined by the cap 5, by a spring 31 supported around the tube 14 by the nut 18. The nut may be advanced or receded along the tube 14 to define a lower limit of movement suited to the requirements of the fuser.
The clips -22 of the member 21 are spaced from the receptacle 3 sufficiently to permit the insertion of the brush thereinto -in such a manner that the ends of the bristles 32 will be in vertical alinement with the outlet vent 6. A window 33 is provided in the front portion of the housing 1 to permit observation of the member 21 to facilitate the lintroduction of the brush thereinto.
In operation my invention is as follows.
- tacle 3. Tooth paste 34 of any desired character may now be placed in the receptacle and the cap 5 rep-laced upon the end o the receptacle, the stem 9 protruding through the extension 17 and into the tube 14 to be engaged by the pawl 27 in the manner previously described. A tooth brush may now be inserted upwardly into the housing 1 and into engagement with the clips 22 of the brush engaging member 21. The housing 1 provides a sanitary case for keeping the brush while not in use. The grip afforded by the clips 22 upon the body portion of the brush 24 is sufficient to cause the member 21 to be moved downwardly with the brush against the spring 31 when the brush is withdrawn from the housing 1, until further movement is prevented by closure of the spring against the nut 18 the pawl 27 operating to move the plunger 8 an equal distance. The downward movement of the member 21 causes the slide 29 to move outof engagement with the discharge vent 6 thereby Apermitting the paste 34 displaced by the downward movement ofthe Vplunger 8 to be dispensed through the vent 6. The downward movement of the member 21 in opening the vent 6 brings the lowermost bristles 32 of the brush 24 into contact with the vent 6 to receive the'paste therefrom, further movement of the brush causing the paste dispensed to be distributed along the length of the bristle portion of the brush. hen further downward movement of the member 21 isprevented by the nut 18 the -brush is pulled downwardly out of engagement with the clips 22, the member 21 immediately being returned to its normalposition by the spring 31, and a further dispjensing of paste through the vent 6 prevented. In this manner the tooth paste automatically dispensed upon the brush when the brush is withdrawn from the hous-y ing thereby avoiding the subsequent' inconvenience and delay of opening a container and applying paste therefrom.
The clips 22 are positioned to engage the body portion of the brush at approximately 1ts mid point to cause the vent 6 to remain open long enough for the paste displaced by the first' downward movement to be dispensed onto the brush.
From the foregoing description it is readily seen that I have provided a convenient and sanitary storage place for both tooth brush and tooth paste in combination with improved means for automatically dispensing paste upon the brush when the brush-is Withdrawn for use.
Having thus described myt'invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
