Be it lrnown that we, HARVEY N. OTT and FRANK lll. BUrToN, citizens of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and `State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Holding llieans for Opaque Objects, of which the following is a speciication.
Vlhis invention relates to holding means or devices such as are used, for instance, in connection with projection apparatus, for holding a postcard or other opaque object, the image of which it may be desired to project.
rl`his application is a division of our application for patent filed Oct. 3l, 1916, Serial No. 128,699.
rlhe objects of the invention are to provide improved holding means for the postrards or other opaque objects adapted to hold objects of different sizes and similar objects in diiferent positions; to provide a device of this sort in which the object may be placed and secured with great ease and facility and to improve devices of this sort in the respects hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The card holder preferably consists of a shallow wooden tray or frame 38 of substantially square shape having upright side walls or fianges 89, and opposite card holding plates or members 40 which are mounted to slide toward and from each other in the tray to iit and hold the card or other flat object. The holding members are mounted to slide toward and from each other on a thin horizontal metal plate 4l which is stationarily secured in the tray, preferably by engaging the edges of the plate in grooves in the opposite walls of the tray. Each of the holding plates or members 40 shown is provided with down-turned ends 42 which are connected by a cross strap 43 extending beneath the supporting plate 4l, and the two holding' members are provided at opposite outer edges with upwardly extending inturned lips or flanges 44 adapted to engage and hold the opposite edges of the card or other flat object. A slide 45 is connected to the bottom cross strap of each holding.
member and is arranged to slide in a guideway 46 which extends in the direction of movement of the holding members on the underside of the supporting plate 4l. These guideways are preferably formed by flanged sheet metal strips secured to the under side of the supporting plate and are arranged parallel with each other side by side, so that the slides can move past each other or overlap in the movements of the holding mem bers toward and from each other. The slides 45 are connected by a lever 47 which has studs or screws at its ends arranged to move in transverse slots 48 in the slides, and is provided between its ends with a journal 49 arranged to turn in a suitable bearingI in the bottom of the tray. This lever causes the holding members to move simultaneously in opposite directions to an equal eX- tent so that when the members are adjusted toward and from each other to hold a card,
they will retain the same in a central position or equally distant from the opposite ends of the holder. A. bar or handle 50 is preferably secured to the outer end of the journal 49 for operating the holding members. The holding members can be moved toward and from each other sufficiently to permit a postcard or analogous object to be held either in a position extending lengthwise or crosswise of the holder, thus enablingpictures whether placed on the cards in one or another position to be properly placed for exposure in the apparatus. rlhev holding members are also thus adapted to bo adjusted so as to fit cards or analogous flat objects which differ in size. By arranging the lever as shown, so that in the intermediate position thereof it extends at right angles to the direction of movement of the holding members, the holding members are permitted a movement sufficient to hold a narrow oblong card either by its short ends or long sides. The card or other object can be readily placed in the holder when the lat ter is removed from the projection apparatus, where it can be readily handled and the card adjusted therein, and after the card is placed in the holder it is securely retained in position thereon and the holder can be readily inserted into and out of the apparatus for exposing and changing the cards or other opaque objects.
We claim as our invention:
l. A card or object holder for projection apparatus comprising a trame, holding members` mounted to slide toward and trom each other on said holder trame, a lever having sliding connections with said holding members tor causing opposite movements thereof, said lever being arranged to swing across a line extending perpendicular t@ the line ot movement oi' the holding members toward and i'rom each other, and an operating handle tor said lever, said handle projecting trom said trame.
2. A card or object holder for projection appary tus comprising a iframe, holding members arranged to slide toward and from each other to hold and release the card or object, guides on said trame ententiing parallel With the direction ot movement oit said holding members, slides secured to said holding members and arranged to slide in said guides., a lever centrally mounted in said .trame and connecting said slides and arranged to swing across a line extending perpendicular to the direction oi' movementoi' said slides tor causing simultaneous opposite movements ot' said holding members, and a handle on said lever, whereby actuation of said handle moves said holding members simultaneously.
3. A card or object holder for projection apparatus comprising a trame, holding members arranged to slide toward and from each other in said trame, a pair of downturned ends on each 01"' said holding members, cross members connecting the downturned ends oi each of said holding members, a slide member secured to each of said cross members, slideivays in said frame for said slide members, and a lever pivoted to said trame and connected at each oi its ends to one ot said slide members i`or moving said holding members simultaneously toward or rom each other.
4C. A card holder or object holder for projection apparatus, comprising a frame, a stationary plate in said frame, holding members arranged to slide toward and from each other on said plate, said holding members having oppositely disposed upturned side ilanges and doivnturned end iianges, a cross strap connecting the doivnturned ends of each o'f said holding members, a slide member iined to each olf said cross straps, slide- Ways on the bottom side orn said stationary plate for said slide members, transverse slots in each oi: said slide members, and a lever ournaled in the bottom oii said trame, studs projecting from the ends of said lever into the slots in said slide members, whereby upon turning movemei t ot said lever said holding embers will be moved toward or lrom each other.
