Description

UNITE STATES PATNT OFFICE.
HORACE LANE, OF W'INDSOR, VERMONT.
SAW-HORSE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE LANE, of Windsor, in the county of lindsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful improvement on saw-horses for securing and holding wood or timber on the horse while the sawyer is sawing the wood or timber into ire-wood or into short pieces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, in which the figure is a perspective view.
My improvementr consists in the following addit-ions to the common saw-horse: First, is the roller A placed near the bottom of the horse on the front side and supported in its place by extending the ends through the Jfront legs of the horse M and N. Near the middle of saidroller is the wheel B with an iron ratchet wheel attached. Attached to said wheel is the lever C which is driven into a socket in the wheel B. There is an iron dog D which holds the ratchet wheel B in its place. There is a spring under the dog D to throw it out of the ratchet wheel B. The dog D is attached to t-he front middle arm E. There is a long middle leg O, and a short leg P attached to it. The leg P is supported by the cross-bar G. In the upper and front part of the arm F is a groove in which is the slide H and attached to the front and upper side of the slide H is t-he iron spur I which is fastened to the slide H with screws. The slide H works on an arbor J. Upon the arbor is a spiral spring K which throws up the slide. There is a cord L attached to the slide 13,755, dated November 6, 1855.
which passes thro-ugh a mortise in the leg O and over a pulley wheel in the same and thence attached to thev ratchet wheel B.
By moving the lever C to the front the ratchet. wheel B is turned partly around and the cord L is made to draw the slide H with the spur I attached down in the groove and the spur I is forced into the stick of wood or timber and holds it firmly in its place until it is sawed. By moving the lever slightly to the fro-nt the dog D is freed from the ratchet wheel B and the spring under the dog throws it up out ofthe ratchet wheel. ratchet wheel B by the hand, at the same time that the lever is moved to the front. I/Vhen the dog D is thrown up the slide H with the spur I is forced up by the spiral spring K and the stick of wood or timber is freed from the spur and the machine is y ready for use agai I claim as my invention- The use of the spur I to hold the wood or timber in its place on the saw horse while the sawyer is sawing the wood or timber into re wood or into short pieces; also the use of' the roller, t-he ratchet wheel, the lever, the dog and spring, the cord, the pulley wheel, the slide, the arbor and the groove and spiral spring combined with the common saw horse substantially as herein set forth and for the purposesabove stated.
I do not make any claim on the common saw-horse, but for the improvements on the saine as herein set forth.
HORACE LANE. `Witnesses J. M. MERRIFIELD, DUDLEY T. CHASE.
