Be it known that I,.HILLIARY B. MGREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmetto, in the county of Manatee and State of Florida, have invented' new and useful Improvementsin Gas and-Oil Vending Devices, of which the following isa specification.` y 1 This invention relates to improvements in liquid vending machines more particularly adapted for vuse in delivering gasolene and lubricating oils Vand-thefprincipal object of theinvention is to provide means controlled by a coin for delivering-a certain amount of liquid after which the deviceis locked and no. more liquid can be secured unless another coin is deposited.
The purpose of the invention is to provide means whereby a customer may secure a supply of gasolene or oil at a service station by depositing the correct sum for the amount of gasolene desired=so that the service of anattendant is not required. In this way the station may be opened day and night for it is impossible to withdrawany of Lthe liquid without depositing the correct sum.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a plurality of setsof devices whereby different rquantities of 'liquid maybe withdrawn from the tank by depositing coins of different denominations. V
vThe invention: also consists in certain other features of construction and inithe combinationand arrangement of the sev eral parts, to be hereinafter fullydescribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.;

Thepiston 3 ofthe pump' has its rod 4 1 provided with a rack 5 which is engaged by a ygear 6 located on the shaft,v 7, the journals of which are carried by one wall ofthe case 1' and bythe bracket- 8 secured to said case. vThe outer end of the said shaft is provided with a crank handle 9 by which the shaft maybe manually` rotated to actu# ate the pump. The inner end of said shaft carries a beveled gear 10 which is loosely mounted thereon and is'connected with the shaft by ratchet mechanism located' in the case 11. This gear 10 meshes with alike gear 12 carried by an upright shaft 13'10- cated in they case. rThis upright shaft is provided with'atootlied wheel v14 andrwith a worm 15. The toothed wheel 14 is adapted to be engaged by a tooth 16 located on'the locking `bar 17, horizontally slidableon ,the
guides 18 carried `by the inner walls ofthe case. Springs 18' hold the bar with its teeth engaging the wheel. The worm,15 is engaged by a worm wheel 19 located on a horizontal shaft 20 mounted in the case andthis'shaft 20 is provided with anumber of toothed wheels 21. A second horizontal shaft 22 is journaled in the case and this shaft 'carries a number of toothed wheels 23 which are splined to the shaft so-thatthey will rotate therewith but haveV sliding movement thereon. These Vwheels 23 are adapted to be moved longitudinally onl the shaft by tlie cams-241 and said shaft 22 is normally held Vin a certain position by thefspring 25. 'Each cam is operatedgby a lever26 which is piv'- oted at 27 and which is -operated by `a coin yas hereinafterdescribed..` The lower end of this lever is provided with an angle part 28 which is connected byapin and slot connection with an arm 29 extendingfrom one part of the cam. In this wayfwhen the lever is rocked the arm 29 will be forced forwardly 'to bring the enlargedparts of the two parts vof the cam together and thus slide the wheel 23 upon the shaft 22 and thus Vplace said wheel into mesh with; one of the release the lever 26 to permit saidlever and i with `a right-angle extension which extends i the cam part to return to normal position,

The coin is forced between :the levers 26 and` to rock said levers bythe arms 38 which have their upper ends provided with inwardly'projecting portions engaging with l the slots 39 formed in the chute. The lower endsof these arms are connected to a crank armf 40 by a link 41 andsaid arms 38 pass through guides 42. Said arms are of curved formation so that when they are brought downwardly by rotation `of shaft 43 which carries -arrn 40 the guideswill `cause them 26 and 35.
to approach each other and thus throw their upper ends into the chute and against the coin resting upon the upper ends of levers said levers byjsaid arms it `will force the levers vapart,thuscausing lever 26 to actuate the cam part to move the wheel 23 into engagement with` the wheel 21 and lever 35` will cause the rod 37 to move the locking bar toV withdraw the tooth 16 froml the wheel 14.A This will permit the shaft 7 to bel rotated by its:` crank handle to cause the pump to be rotatediuntilit causes thewheel 23 to make a complete revolution when the pin 32 on said wheel 23 will strike the latch bar` and release the lever 26 so that the parts `are `returned to normal position and the `shaft 7 locked against further movement by Vthe tooth 16 on the locking bar 17 engaging the wheel 14 or shaft 13.
, After the coin passes the levers 26 and 35 itwill droplinto a suitable receptacle or it may fall directly on tothe floor of the case. Theshaft 43 has one end extending through the case/where it is provided with a crank handle 43.

What I claim is v 1. A device of the class described comprising liquid delivery means, manually operated means for actuating the same, a shaft rotatably connected with the manually op;- ,erated means, locking means for said shaft,
a pair of transversely arranged shafts, 'f means for rotating one of said shaftsv by thefirst mentioned shaft, a gear on each of the transversely arranged shafts, one of said gears having. sliding movement on its shaft and being normally out of' mesh with the other gear, a cam memberV for moving said sliding gear into mesh with the other gear, ycoin controlled means for releasing the lockingf means and for actuating the cam member, such means including a pivoted lever actuated by the coinand connectedwith the cammember, a latch bar engaging ysaid lever for holding the locking means in inoperative position Vand the gears in mesh and a projection on the sliding gear for `movingthe Y latch bar into releasing position when said gear makes a complete lrevolution.

A device ofthe class described comprising liquid .delivery means, manually operated means for actuating the same, a shaft l rotatably connected with the manually operated means, looking" means for said shaft, a pair .of transversely arranged shafts, means for rrotatably connecting oneshaft of said shafts with the first mentioned shaft, a plurality of gears'onrsaid transversely arranged shafts, the gears on one shaft having sliding movement thereon, spring means for normally holding said sliding gears Vout of mesh with the gears on the other transverse shaft, cam members for moving said sliding gears into mesh with said other gears, a pivoted lever connected with each cam member and adapted to be operated by a coin, means for connecting said lever with the locking means to move said means into unlocking position When the-lever is actuated by a coin, a latch bar engaging said lever for holding it in position with the locking means in inoperative position and the gears in mesh and a projection on each sliding gear for engaging said latch bar for releasing the same When the gear makes a complete revolution.`
