Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 19, 1921. Continuation of application Serial No. 182,912 filed July 26, 1917. This application filed July 27, 1918.

Be it known that I, ALVAH W. CLEMEn'r,
a citizen of the United States, residing at .July 26,1917.
Cleveland, in thecounty of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Acid-Resisting Alloys, (C,) of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact description.
This application is a continuation of my application, Serial Number 182,912, filed The object of this invention is to produce an alloy which is resistant to the action of acids, among which most prominently may be mentioned sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric.
In speaking of this alloy asresistant ta acids, it is 'not intended to go so faras to say that it is resistant to all laboratory tests that might be made with these acids, but practice has demonstrated that. in commercial use it is resistant and admirably fulfils its-function. 1 w
In those industries which require that acids be' pumped and conducted from one receptacle or placeto another, the only practical conductors which are at present used are made of porcelain or some/similar mater1al having inferior physical properties,
being brittle and substantially unmachinable. These porcelain pipes which are thus 1 used are furnished only in certain lengths an" 'in designing a system for handling acids it requires that the, system be designed with special reference to the pipes and other material which may be obtained, rather than designing-the system from'the viewpoint of producing its most advantageous arrangement. f

3. An acid resisting alloy containing approximately 40 per cent. of chromium, a metal having the properties of molybdenum, together "with iron and carbid of iron and chromium.
4. An. acid resisting alloy containing approximately 40 per cent. of chromium, a metal having the properties of molybdenum, together with iron and 1 to 2 per cent. of carbon.
5. An acid resisting alloy comprising substantially 40 per cent. of chromium, substantially 1 to 2 per. cent. of carbon, substantially 4 to 6 per cent. of molybdenum and the remainder of iron.
