Be it known that I, SoLMoN Si-iUMsiiY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of VNew York have invented certain new and 3 useful Improvements in lSofa-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification;

rlhis invention relates to convertible furni-A ture of the sofa-bed variety. The objects of the invention being to provide an article of furniture of the character named which, in its initial or folded form, occupies small lateral floor-space and embodies an ornamental sofa or chair-structure having ample space for containing an inclosed mattress and bed-clothing; which may be readily eX- tended into its bed form which is inexpensive and simple in construction; and which'comprises an ornamental wooden supporting casing and a folding metal framework yof novel construction land comprising several parts correlatively arranged whereby all parts of the structure may beV disconnected to admit of cleaning and for purposes of transportation; the partsibeing of construction adapted to provide practical structures in both its bed and sofa forms.

The invention will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1i, is a plan view 'of' my improved article of furniture, taken on the line 1 1, of Fig. 2, and shown in its extended orrbed-form Fig. 2, a vertical sectional elevation taken on theline 2 2, of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the structure folded in sofa-form.

Folding legs 15, are pivoted'to fixed pins y f, on the sidesof the outer end of the said section D, for thepurpose ofproviding furi ther support for the frame when the device is used as a bed. These legs near theirfree ends are respectively in pivotal engagement with connectingfrods 16, which pivotally connect with rods 17 said rods 17, swing on fixed pins 7L, extended from the upper ends of the uprights 4c, of' the supporting brackets B, and they are respectively prossvided with a slot 18; the said slots 18, en-

said rods 17, are further provided with l..- shaped stops 19, which assist to support the sections D, when the mattress-engaging frame is extended.

YExtended horizontally, when the device is lused as a bed, and stretched taut across the framework sections C, l), and E, and secured thereto by suitable connections is a woven wire fabric F, which is adajited for supporting a mattress and bed-clot ing.

To assist in the operation of swinging the frame section C, spiral springs 21, are connected at one end to said sections, and at the otherv end toswinging rods 22, which are in pivotal engagement with the arms 5, of the brackets B. rllhe arms 5 of the brackets B, are also provided with lugs 23, having lateral extensions 9A, for supporting' the rods 17, when the device is folded. The back A, is provided with a swinging latch 25, having a notch 26, which engages a spring-pressed bolt 27, employed to hold the back in open position shown by Fig. 1, of the drawings.

In the operation and use of the invention, when it is desired to convert the dcvice from its initial or sofa-form to thatof a bed, it is first necessary to swing the back A into position shown by Fig. 2 ot the drawings and then extend the mattress-supporting frame into position also shown by Fig. 2; this movement of the frame sections cordinately operates the other swinging and foldable metal parts and places the structure in position ready to receive a mattress and bed-clothing, theV woven wire fabric F, being stretched taut and on a horizontal plane, and the parts'C, E, and D, now .forming sides of a practically continuous frame having all parts thereof on a common horizontal plane. Then reconverting the device into form of a sofa the section l), is swung Vand lifted upwardly' and then moved downwardly and inwardly, said action causing correlative movements of the other connected folding and swinging parts until the device is folded into position shown by Fig. 3, of the drawings. Then the seat-back A, is swung downwardly into position whereby all bed-parts are concealed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A sofa-bedstead comprising a casing having end pieces, a. front and back, and a cushioned swinging seat-back, and a cushioned swinging seat, and supporting brackets each having an obliquely extended arm and an upright arm, and a mattress-supporting framework consisting of an inner section, an intermediate section and an outer section, said sections being in pivotal engagement with each other, said obliquely extended arms in pivotal engagement with said inner section, and said upright arms bearing beneath they joint of said intermediate and outer sections.

2. A soia-bedstead comprising a fixed support embodying a back piece, end pieces and afrontpiece, and a cushioned swinging back, and a cushioned swinging seat, and a folding mattress-carrying frame consisting of an inner swinging section, an outer swinging section and an intermediate section, pivotal connections for said sections, and a woven wire fabric carried by and between said sections, and brackets fixed to said front Apiece and having each an obliquely extended arm in pivotal engagement with said inner section, said mattress-supporting frame adapted to be alternately folded and extended, swinging legs pivoted to said outer section, connecting-rods pivoted to said legs, and slotted rods pivotedto said connectingrods and engaging fixed pins on the outer one of said sections, and hinge means connecting said seat with said frame and brackets.

3. A sofa bedstead comprising a support, and a foldable mattress-carrying frame comprising an inner section having laterally extended pins, an outer section having laterally extended pins, an intermediate section, means pivoting said sections to each other, brackets for supporting said frame, slotted rods swinging from said brackets and engaging the pins of said outer section, connecting rods, andswinging legs, said connecting rods being connected between said slotted rods and swinging legs wherebymovement of the vouter swinging section operates them, substantially as shown and described.
