BACK FOR BED-DAVENPORTS.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. HUBBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and S-tate of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs for Bed- Davenports, of which the following is a p specification.

This invention relates to improvements' in backs for folding bed davenports or sofas 'of the type that are adapted for use as davenports or sofas when folded and as beds when extended.-

The object of my improvement is to provide a bed davenport having a back that is hinged to the side arms of the same in such a manner that it may be quicklyland easily reversed or turned back into an out of the way position to permit the opening of the bed and to leave the bed entirely free and clear when it is opened. A

Another obj ect is to provide a hinged and reversible back member for a bed davenport that is connected by iexible connectors with the extensible bed mechanism in such a mannerhas to be operated simultaneously therewit A further object is to provide a davenport back thatlwill reverse without dropping down and that is connected with the two side arms in such a manner as to forml a rigid support or brace therebetween to thereby eliminate the necessity of a secondary or false back.

A still further object is to provide a movable bed davenport back that may be conveniently constructed in various types and designs of davenports and that is particularly well adapted for use in the construction of bed davenports of the overstued t pe.

yWith the above and other objects in View as will appear from the following description, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts of a bed davenport as will be more 4,clearly hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a sectional view of a bed davenport constructed in accordance with this invention as it may appear when folded for use as a davenport. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same extended for use as a bed. Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the. davenport as it may appear when folded. Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings the numerals 6 and 7 designate the two side arms of a bed davenport and 8 designates a frame member that is rigidly secured to the front edges of the two sidearms and serves to support the same in spaced apart parallel relation.

Disposed within the lower portion of the' davenport between the side arms 6 and 7 is an extensible or folding'bed frame having side bars that are each preferably formed of four sections 107 11, 12 and 13, of angle iron, the end sectlons 10 being relatively short and being connected by pivots 14 with the respective side arms 6 and 7 so that they will swing from a substantially horizontal position when extended to a substantially vertical position when folded.

The bed mechanism just described is of well known form of construction, my invention residing in the back hereinafter described.

In davenports of this type where the'bed opens in the manner shown so that the foot of the bed is adjacent the back of the davenport ithas been found necessary to utilize all available space and for this reason the ends of the side links 10 are pivoted so near to the rear edge of the side arms 6 and 7 that it is necessary to move the cushioned back of the davenportv out of the way when the bed is extended. This is usually done by providing a rigid or permanent back support, between the two side arms and by connecting the back cushion of the davenport with the ri 'd back in such a manner that it may be lifted up out of the way or may be entirely removed.

In accordance with my invention I dispense with the ermanent or rigid back member and provide a cushioned or stuffed davenport back 15 that is pivotally secured by hinges 16 and 17 to upright hinge supports 18 and 20 on the rear edges of the 'side arms 6 and 7.

' The hinges 16 and 17 are connected with the back 15 about midway between its top and bottom edges so that the said back may be reversed or turned from the position shown'in F'ig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2 without being lowered or raised to an great extent.

I he back 15 is preferably cut away as at 21 and 22 just below the hinges to afford clearance for the supports 18 and 20.

The lower edge of the back 15 is connected by fiexible connectors 23 with the links 10 of the bed frame near the points where such links 10 are pivoted to the links 11 so that as the bed frame is folded the back 15 will be automatically moved from the reversed position shown in Fig. 2, to the closed or folded position shown in Fig. 1.

The lowermost corners of the back 15 are cut away as at 24 to fit within cut away portions 25 in the side arms 6 and 7 thereby giving the arms and the back the relative appearance they should have in a properly designed overstuffed davenport.

26 is a seat member that is secured to the bed frame and is provided with upwardly projecting supports 27 that engage with the back 15 and serve to hold the back and the seat in the proper relative position when the bed mechanism is folded. When the bed is extended the supports 27 may rest upon the floor and serve as legs.

The rear portion of the back 15 may be cut away as at 23 to afford clearance for the supports 27.

A strap 30 may be secured to the seat 26 to facilitate the extension of the bed.

When the bed is folded the several parts will assume substantially the positions shown in Fig. 1. The bed is extended by grasping the strap 26 and exerting an outward and upward pull thereon thus lifting the seat 26 and swinging such seat and the bed frame into the position shown in Fig. 2 and at the same time turning the back member 15 through an angle of substantially one hundred and eighty degrees where it will be entirely out ofthe way of the end of the bed frame.

rlhe back 15 regardless of the position into which it is turned serves as a brace and support for holding the two side arms in relatively fixed spaced apart relation.

The pins of the hinges 16 and 17 are preferably removable so that the back can be easily taken off or put on.

The form of reversible back above de scribed is particularly well adapted to be employed in the construction of overstuffed davenports but the same may also be used in the construction of ordinary davenports as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, wherein I have shown two spaced apart side arms 32 and 33 having a back member 34 provided at each end with an outwardly projecting pin 35 that is arranged to fit within a' bearing bracket 36 on its respective side arm to thereby pivotally connect the back 34 with the side arms 32 and 33 so that it may be reversed from the position shown by full lines in Fig. 4 to the position shown by broken lines or vice versa.

The bed frame in the davenport shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is substantially the same as the bed frame shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and is connected with the back 34 by fiexible connectors, not shown, that correspond to the connectors 23.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the form of construction and method of operation of this bed davenport back will be readily apparent, but while I have de. scribed the principle of operation of the invention together with the device that I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof it will be understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claims.

What I claim is:

1. A bed davenport comprising two side arms supported in relatively rigid spaced apart relation, a sectional bed frame pivoted at one end to said side arms and arranged to fold therebetween, va reversible back member having each end hinged at substantially midway between its two edges to said side arms, and a flexible tie member connecting said bed frame with the lower edge of said back member for moving said back member when said bed frame is folded.

2. A bed davenport of the class described comprising rigidly supported spaced apart side arms, a folding bed frame having a 100 relatively short section at one end that is pivotally connected with said side arms near the rear edges thereof and is arranged to be moved from a substantially horizontal extended position to a substantially vertical 105 folded position, a back member hinged at each end to said side arms at a point midway between the top and bottom edges thereof and arranged to turn through an angle of substantlally one hundred and 110 eighty degrees and flexible tie members connecting the bottom edge of said back member with the movable end of said short bed frame section.
