ATTORNEY.
canes s r-res GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
Application filed September 7, 1920. Serial No. 408,520.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MORTON, a citizen of the United States residing at League City, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a garment hanger, and the object is to provide a device which shall serve the usual purpose, and which when not in use may be folded into compact form, in order that it may readily be placed in a suit case or the like.
A further object is to provide, in a device of the type indicated, a plurality of hingedly connected arms, with certain novel means for bracing the arms when in operative position.
A still further object is to provide, in connection with a plurality of arms hingedly connected, a supporting element retained in position by the closing movement of the arms, and a. transverse bracing element for connection withthe free ends of the arms.
A still further object is to provide in connection with the construction above outlined, a bracing element comprising a plurality of telescoping devices, with certain novel means for efiecting' connection between the telescoping elements and the arms of which the device is constructed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con struction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of the device in side elevation, the arms being closed and the bracin elements being in position,
ig. 2 is a view showing the arms swung with reference to each other, and showing the engaging device for the bracing elements thrown to open position,
Fig. 3 is a view of the device in folded position,
Fig. 4 is a detail described below, and I Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 2, with the plate in closed position.
In carrying out my invention I employ a plurality of arms 10 and 12 connected by means of a. hinge 14, these arms having abutting ends 15 and 16. One end portion 15 is a trace provided with an aperture 17, and the other 7 end portion is provided with a groove '18,
permitting a supporting element 20, which in the present instanceis-in the form of a hook to be retained in position by the simple operation of throwing the arms into aline-' ment and causing the end thereof to firmly v grip the shank of the hook. The shankpor- A bracing element, comprises a plurality of sections 28 and 29, one of these sections carrying a sleeve 30 receiving the adjacent end of the other section. The extreme ends of. the brace are received by sockets in the ends of the arms lOand 12. Arm 12 isprovided with an aperture or socket 31, and the other arm is provided with a socket 33 having communication with an open slot 34, so that the corresponding end of the brace may be received by the socket after the arms 10 and 12 have been thrown into alinement. This socket last named is covered by'a pivoted plate 35 pivoted at 35 having an offset 36 positioned for engagement with the upper wall of the slot to limit the opening move-- ment of the plate. A pin 38 is provided with a head under which the end portion of the plate passes when the latter is thrown toa position for closing the slot and retaining the adjacent end of the brace in position.
When the device is folded into the position shown inFig. 3, the telescoping sections, detached, are retained against the arms oted plate for closing said slot and retaining the end of the brace within the socket.
2. In a device of the class described, a plurality of hingedly connected arms, a brace for retaining said arms in an extended position, one of the arms being provided with a socket having an open side for receiving the corresponding end of the brace, a pivoted plate for closing said open portion of the socket, an offset formed on thevedge of the plate for engaging one wall of the socket and limiting the movement of the plate, and a device for retaining the plate in position for closing the socket and retaining the brace therein. I j
3. In a device of the class described, a plurality of hingedly connected arms, each of said arms being provided with a socket near its free end and on the inner side thereof, the
longitudinally into one of said sockets, and
to be inserted in theother socket by lateral movement through the open slot, and a pivoted plate for closing said open slot and retaining the brace within the adjacent socket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R; MORTON." Witnesses:
M. M. BLACK, C. E. SANDERS.
