RAILROAD-TIE.
To all whomt may concern Be it known that I, Profra S. RACHWAL, a citizen of Poland, residing at Depew, county of Erie, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway track equipment, and particularly to the ties and means for securing rails thereon.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hollow metallic tie, adapted to have rails secured upon its upper surface.
A fuither object is to provide means whereby the holding bolts are prevented from turning, the rails being clamped by clip elements engaged by the bolts in a secure manner,
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a materia-l part of this disclosure and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a railroad tie made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan View parts being broken away in order to show the construction of the tie and rail secured thereto.

In the drawings, the running rails are shown to be of the ordinary type comprising heads 10, stems 11, and flanged base 12, of the ordinary rolled typel In order to support the rails and hold them in proper spaced relation, one from the other, a metallic tie is used, the same having a relatively level upper surface 14, merged into beveled side elements 15, terminating in longitudinally disposed vertical sides 16, the san-ie adjoining similarly constructed ends 17, joined by the beveled connecting elements 18, all of the several parts being so formed as to be readily made by ordinary processes of metal foundry practice.

Extending outwardly from they openings 20 and 20', are rectangular recesses 21 and .21', it being understood that the main openings are adapted to receive the bolt heads 24, while the stems 25 of the bolts lmay readily pass through the narrow recesses 21 and 21', the heads 24 being held from turning, when the bolt stems are within the recesses 21 and 21', by pairs of integrally formed lugs 23 and 23'; positioned, one upon each side of the slots 21 and 21', at such a distance therefrom as to permit the head 211 to enter therebetween, thus preventing the same from being turned. l The bolts extend upward through openings in removable metallic plates 27, upon which the base flanges 12 of the running rails rest, and also pass through clips 28, formed with extensions 29, having a beveled lower surface adapted to contact with the upper surface of the base flanges of the runningrail, these clips being held in Vposition by nuts 30 fitted to the upper ends of bolts 25. In operation, the heads ofthe bolts are passed through the openings 20 and 20', the bolts extending through the ties, and entered in the slots 21 and 21', where the heads become engaged between the lugs 23' and 23', preventing them from being turned. The plates 2T are thenplaced in position, over the bolts confining them from moving, the rail laid thereon, the clamping clips 28 29 placed over the flange ofthe rails and the nuts applied holding the structure firmly clasped together, thus preventing either of the rails from,moving.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an easily constructed metallic tie has been disa hollow elongated metallic casting havingv a substantially level top, rectangular openings arranged in staggered relation in pairs in they top of said casting, relatively narrow recesses extending outward from said openings, said openings being adapted to receive heads of bolts, and said recesses the stems thereof, lugs formed upon the opposite sides of each of said recesses, adapted to engage with the heads of said bolts, a metallic cover plate overlying saidopenings, said` plate having openings through which the stems of said bolts extend and are prevented from moving inwardly, metallic clips engageable with said bolts on the upper side of said plate, said clips having a portion adapted to engage with the upper beveled surface of the running rails, and nuts for securing said clips and plates on the surface of said tie, said nuts engaging with said bolts.
