UNETEE HARRY WARE IAN, OF CLEVELAND, OHM).
VITREQUS-COATED SHINGL'E AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented Mar 29, 19211.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRY WARMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county or" Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements: in Vitreens- Coated Shingles and the like, of which the following is a. specification;
This invention relates to protected sheet metal articles such as roofing shingles, guttering, siding sheets and the like, that exposed to the weather, and has for its object:
To provide a process andv product in which the sheet metal body of a. shingle or like article is faced or protected by a weather resisting coating adapted to impart a slate like appearance to the article, and with which a normal flexibility of the article is retained without liability to cracking or seaming the coating.
The accompanying drawing is an enlarged fragmentary section of a? coated sli'ingle embodying. the present invention.
In carrying out the present invention, the sheet metal article after receiving the usual initial treatment has applied to its surface or surfaces a mixture of paste of feldspar, fluorspar, manganese oxid, soda ash, nitrate of soda andborax, preferably in the following proportions z-Feldspar 2 parts, fluorspar 1:} parts, manganese oxid 1 part, soda ash 2% parts, nitrate of soda 1?} parts and borax :1; part. The mixture formed into a paste with Water is evenly spread on the surprimary An exterior or outer surface coating of a granular mineral material, such as ground or crushed slate, quartz, or the like, is evenly spread over the aforesaid primary or ground coating, after which the prepared articles are exposed to a drying operation to remove the contained moisture in the coating or coatings aforesaid.
The next step in the present process involves the firing of thearticles in a suitable kiln or mufile at a temperature approximat ing 2000 Fahr, the exposure continuing until a very perfect union between said coatings and bcwveen the ground coating and the surface of the metal body of the article has been effected, and with the granular nature of said exterior coating still remaining in the outer surface thereof and adapted to afford a granular and very efiective surface appearance to the product. The relativethickness of the metal body and of the respective coatings is shown on an enlarged scale in the drawing in which, 1 designates the metal body of the article, 2 the coating of the aforesaid vitreous mixture, and 3 the coating of pulverized slate or the like. A material feature of the present process involves a gradual diminution of the penetration of the one coating into the other. And in that the mineral substances used in said exterior coating can be selected of any desired color and shade, it is possible to p 0- duce in a ready manner articles to meet t 1e varied requirements of the trade as to shade, color,- etc.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a sheet metal plate having an inner coating of vitreous material and an exterior coating of' crushed slate, said coatings being fused together and to the surface of the articles, with the granular nature of the exterior coating still remaining on the outer surface thereof,
substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, of September, 1919.
