Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. as, 1921.
' Application filed December 8, 1919. Serial No. 343,421.
Be it knownthat I, FRANK RAoz, citizen of Hungary, and resident of ,Coatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Cigarette Holders and Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to machines for dispensing cigarettes. g a
The object of th's invention is the provision of a simple compact and easily operated I device for holding cigarettes therein and the -may be withdrawn .lighted.
provision of meansfor presenting one cigarette at a time partly ejected from saidmachine, and for producing a flame near one end of said cigarette from said machine F0 the attainment of the aforesaid and other objects, I employ the mechanism shown in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of as it appears from the outside.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 4: is a side view and partial section of the same on line l-4c of Fig. 3. V
Fig. 5 is a front elevation and partial section of my device showing a cigarette in dotted lines, partly ejected from said device.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the ejectous shafts and studs on which the rotatable instrumentalities of my device are mounted. Opening 2 in my device, is provided for the insertion of one cigarette 40 at a time into tubes 3 and slotted tubes 1. Each of said tubes 3 is held by arms 5 to gear 6, which is mounted on stud 7. Said gear 6 is driven through gear 8 and shaft 9 by ratchet wheel 10, pawl 11, and crank 12, the handle 13 of which projects through opening 14 in casing 1. Said pawl 11 is carried by crank 12 and is held against ratchet wheel 10 by spring 39 attached at one end thereof to said crank. is mounted on the other end of shaft 9 and plungers by'arm 2O joint-22.
.sired to rotate gear 17 in order to eject cigarette so that said cigarette my device Removable plug 35 serves to means of A gear.15 similar to gear 8 eng 16 being loosely 'mounted on cylindrical reservoir 33. Arms 4E1 are suitably attached to gear 16 and support slotted tubes 4:, in which 17 are slidably inserted. 'Lugs 18 are provided on said plungers for engaging slots 19 in tubes 4:, said lugs being" operated ivoted on segmental gear 21 at car 21 is mounted on stud 23 and is rotated by means of handle 24 attached thereto and passing through slot 45 in casing 1. The length of slot 45 is determined by the angle 21 foroperating arm 20 and plunger 40 out of tube 4: into position for lighting said ci arette. Pin 38 on gear 21 is provided or engaging arm 20 when said gear is rotated for giving forward motion to said arm, said gear 21 being rotated by'pulling handle 9A downward against the section of a light spring 36 which acts to bring gear 21 and steel striker 30 back to their normal positions. j
Pinion 25 on stud 26 engages rack 27 which is provided with a slot 28. Said rack 27 is slidably mounted on rods 29 in said slot 28, and has an arm 31 thereon, which arm is suitably shaped to support the hard steel striker 30 in a horizontal position, Fig. 8. Said striker 30 coacts with flint 37, mounted in tubular projection 32- of cylindrical reservoir 33 to produce sparks. Said reservoir is adapted for hold ing a suitable inflammable liquid and has a wick 34: therein leading into projection 32. close the end of reservoir 33, which is filled by turning the machinepartly on its side and removing plug 35 whereby an opening is exposed through which the liquid may be poured into the reservoir,'after which the plug is replaced and the machine righted.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows: I
After the tubes have been loaded with cigarettes, and reservoir 33 filled, the machine is ready for dispensing the cigarettes. Handle 24, now at the upper end of slot 45, is brought down quickly to the lower end of said slot whereby segmental gear 21 and pinion 25 therethrough are rotated, and rack 28 is caused to slide backward with a rapid movement. During said movement steel striker 3O strikes flint 37, producing sparks which drop into projection 32 on to wick 34, whereby said wick is ignited and a flame produced. The end of projection 32 is uncovered when striker 30 is moved past said projection by the motion of rack 28, so that air may pass freely to said wick and allow it to burn. Simultaneously with the production of the flame, arm 20 is moved forward by pin 38 on gear 21. The upper end of said arm is properly shaped to engage lug 18 of plunger 17 and moves said plunger forward in tube 4, whereby cigarette 40 is partly ejected from the machine, one end thereof, in the ejected position, being very near the-flame or over said flame depending on the adjustment desired, Fig. 5. Handle 24 being released, gear 21 and striker 30 are brought back by spring 36 to their normal positlons, whereby projection 32 is covered and the air out ofi from the flame which is extinguished.
Partly ejected cigarette 40 Fig. 5 may be with the fingers, or the lips may be applied end of the cigarette and a puff or two taken to make sure of the end being lighted, before handle 24 is released.
It is obvious that the operation of handles 13 and 24 may be made coin-controlled by the addition of the usual mechanism not shown ordinarily used for that purpose.
It is also obvious that by suitably proportioning the various ,parts shown, the machine may be adapted, if desired to be carried about the person. a
