- TARPAULIN.
Application filed May 5, 1920.
To all wlw/1a 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRED WV. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Powell, in the county of Park and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tarpaulins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tarpaulins and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved taipaulin especially adapted for use in connection with motor vehicles, which can be folded beneath a vehicle seat, and which is so constructed as to have a variety of different useful purposes such as an emergency rain, wind and sun shield for the side of a touring car, a ground cover for use in making repairs underneath a car, or as a spread on camping trips or for a cover or protector for baggage and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device for use in roadside repairs of motor vehicles which includes a canvas or other flexible or waterproof body having a portion of one surface thereof divided by a single flexible member into a plurality of compartments, the compartments forming pockets for the reception of parts of the vehicle` while repairs are being made thereto, thereby preventing the misplacing of said parts or the dirtying thereof by sand and the like, the flexible member being arranged on the body in such a manner that a smooth uninterrupted surface is left at one part of the body for the drivers head when the body is being used as a ground cover, when repairs are being made to the undersurface of the car.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device especially adapted for use in connection with motor vehicles of the above character which isV durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture. and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other obiects in view. the invention consists in the novel constructioniv arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed `and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. forming; a part of this specification. in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im proved device.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
serial No. 379,155.
.lfig. l2 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line '3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A. indicates the improved device, which includes an elongated rectangular body 5 formed of flexible waterproof material7 preferably of heavy canvas, but which can beinade of any other desirable watei proof material. rilhe edges of the body 5 are folded inwardly as at 6 and sewed in position by stitches 7. The body 5 can be made of any desired length and width and it is preferred that the same be made large enough to permit the user to lay on they same in making repairs underneath the car or permit the use thereof as a bed during camping trips.
A plurality of eyelets 8 are placed around the margin of the body 5 at equi-distantly spaced points, and these eyelets permit the fastening of the body 5 to the top of a motor vehicle and to the ground to form a shield or half tent for protection from the sun rays during an outing or from a sudden storm.
rlhe upper surface of the body 5 adjacent to one end thereof has secured thereto by suitable stitches or the like 9 a flexible rope 10 which is folded so as to form a plurality of compartments 1 1. rlhese compartments form pockets for the reception of the parts of a, car when road side repairs are being made to the same and it is to be understood that the body is laid on the ground adjacent to the car.
As clearlv shown in Fie. 1 of the drawinc-s. the rope or other flexible member 10 is extended transversely across the bodv 5 adiacent to one end thereof as at 12 and. then extended longitudinally for short distance as at 13 and then inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of the body as at 1a and then toward. the transverse portion 12 as at 15. This arrangement of the flexible member 10 only reouires the use of a single length of rope and leaves the upper surface of the bodv 5 between the compartments 11 smooth and unobstructed. as at 16. This smooth portion permits the head of the user to be laid on the saine without any discomfort while making repairs to the under portion of a car.
While the compartments 11 have been formed in the above described manner it is 5 to be understood that the. same can be formed in any other Way desired by the manufacturer and more than one length of rope or strip c used.
The improved device A can be effectively used for starting,IV a stalled machine which is stuck in the mud or a rut. lhen used for this purpose the body 5 is folded longitudinally and one end of the same placed underneath the rear Wheel after which the l5 car is started and the body 5 will form a tread or track for the rear Wheels and permit a firm grip to be had for the same. lf so desired, the body 5 can be folded transversely so as to expose the rope 10 and the portions 13 and 15 thereof Will form cleats for the rear Wheels and permit a ready grip to be obtained thereby on the body 5.
rChe uses of the improved device A is unlimited and will readily suggest themselves to the motorists when the occasion arises.
Changes in details may be made Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; but,
I claim:
l.v A motor vehicle accessory comprising a fiat elongated body and a rope secured to one surface of the body defining` a plurality of retaining flanges arranged to form spaced compartments.
2. A motor vehicle accessory comprising a flat elongated foldable body, a rope secured to the upper surface of the body adjacent to the one end thereof defining` aV plurality of spaced compartments, the upper surface of the body between the compartments being unobstructed.
3. A motor vehicle accessory comprising y a flat elongated flexible body, and a flexible rope secured to the upper surface ofthe body and extending' transversely across the 4;, same adjacent to one end thereof, the terminals of the rope being folded to form a pair of retainingpockets. f
4l. el motor vehicle accessory comprising' a flat elongated foldable body having a stripV secured to one surface thereof forming` a plurality of spaced equi-distantly disposed parallel Hanges.
i 5. A motor vehicle accessory comprising' a flat vlieirible body, reinforcinlgfV Lmeans formed on the edges ofthe body, equildiser tantly spaced eyelets extending through the reinforced edges of the body, and pockets formed on the upper surface of the body.y
