Lid-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to 11d supporting devices for holding a 11d in open position and has for its object the provision of a novel device for holding open the lid or coveroi a talking machine cabinet, the device automatically operating to hold the lid when the lid ismerely raisedand the device furthermore permitting return of the lid to closed position when the lid is merely raised somewhat above its normal open position.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easily applied, highly eiiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details 01. construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a talking machine cabinet and its cover, showing my device applied thereto and showing the cover closed,

Referring more'particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a talking machine cabinet and B designates an ordinary hinged cover thereof. Mounted in the top of the cabinet is a plate 10 having a longitudinal slot 11 into which projects a lug 12.
Carried by the lid B and pivotally mounted within a bifurcated bracket 13, is an arm 14 which is slidable through the slot 11 in the plate 10 and which isdisposed between one end of the slot and the lug 12 so that it will gravitationally bear against the lug 12 at all times. fit one side the arm 1% is re cessed, as shown at 15, and this recess has a long curved wall 16 which merges into a notch 17 which provides the retaining shoulder 18. Pivotally mounted upon the arm 14, as shownat 19, is a movable cam-1ike mem ber O which is so pivoted that its center of gravity will be such that its lower end will normally, that is when the cover 18 is closed,
engage at the juncture of the curved wall 16 with the straight edge of the arm. This movable member 20has a curved edge 21 spaced. from the curved wall 16 of the recess to provide a passage andwhen the member 20 is in normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, its upper end will be disposed in spaced relation to the shoulder 18 ofthe arm.
Assuming that the cover B is closed, as shown inFig. 1, when the operator lifts the cover the arm 141 will ride within the slot 11 with the lug 12 against the lower edge of the arm. During thls movement of the arm, when the upper end of the movable member 20 engages the lug 12, the lug 12 will be deflected into the space between the upper end of the member 20 and the shoulder 18, or in other words, the arm 1 1 will drop so that the space between the shoulder 18 and the member 20 will pass over the lug 12 whereupon the lug 12 will seat within the notch 17 when further elevating of the cover 13 is discontinued. The cover will then be eiiectively supported in elevated position without any danger of dropping.
When it is desired to close the cover, the operator grasps it and moves it still farther upwardly whereupon the movement of the arm 14 will cause the lug 12 to ride along the space between the curved edge 21 of the member 20 and the curved wall 16 oi the recess 15 until the lug 12passes beyond the member 20 and against the lower straight edge of the arm 14. As soon as the lug 12 passes from between the curved wall of the recess and the curved edge of the member 20, the member 20 will gravitate into the position shown in Fig. 4: with the lower end engaging the juncture of the curved wall 16 with the lower straight edge. The operator then allows the cover 13 to descend whereupon the lug 12 will ride idly over the outer straight edge of the member 20"as. the. arm 14c returns to normal position. The parts are then in proper position for a repeated operation.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a lid support 7 which will automatically operate to hold the lid in open position without touching the device and which will also operate to permit the lid or'cover to be reclosed also without any necessity for manual manipulation. In combination with a casing and its hinged cover, a cover supporting device comprising a lug carried by the casing, an arm pivotally connected with and depending from the cover and having its lower edge bearing against said lug, said arm being recessed at said lower edge to define a curved wall and a retaining shoulder, and a movable member pivoted within said recess and engageable by said lug.
3. In combination with a casing and its hinged cover, a cover supporting device comprising a lug carried'by the casing. an arm pivotally connected with and depending from the cover and having its lower edge bearing against said lug, said arm being recessed at said lower edge to define a, curved wall and a retaining shoulder, and a movable member pivoted within said recess and engageable by said lug, said movable member being eccentrically pivoted whereby its lower end will no 'mally engage against said curved wall at its juncture with the lower edge of said arm.
