OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
HANDLE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnrrr GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handle-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanylng drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this applicatlon, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a face view of a handle lock constructed in accordance with my invention.

This invention relates to an improvement in handle locks, and while adapted for various purposes, is especially designed for automobile doors. In the more eneral construction of handle locks the loc ing mechanism is arranged in the handle itself. This necessitates that the handle shall be of sufficient size to contain the locking mechanism and is more or less restricted in design.
In automobile doors the faces are freuently curved or arranged at an angle to t e plane of the handle; and the object of i this invention is to so connect the escutcheon housing 12 connected by a web 30, this casing being mounted in a suitable recess formed for it in the door in which it is held in place by a face plate or escutcheon 13 which may be secured in place by screws the other door. The handle 19 may be of any approved design herein shown as of bar type formed with a round shank 20 which fits in the shank housing 11 and with an inwardly extending latch-operating spindle 21. The shank is formed with a locking notch 22 to receive the upper end of a verticall arranged locking pin 23 formed at its ower .end with a camdisk 24 having a cam groove 25 which receives the eccentric pin 26 at the inner end of a key cylinder 27 which is mounted in the key housing 12, the key opening being exposed through an opening formed for it in the face plate 13. The
knob shank is also formed with a shallow holding recess 28 adapted to receive a spring actuated pin 29 mounted in the web 33, and
adapted to yieldingly hold the handle in its normal position when unlocked. To look the handle the key cylinder is turned to raise the in 23so as to force it into the locking note 22 so as. to firmly hold the handleshank against rotation, thus preventing the operation of the latch. The turning of the key. cylinder in the usual way draws the pin downward so as to disenga e it from the handle shank permitting that andle to be freely turned. By connecting the face plate with the housing as shown, theplatemay stand at any desired angle with relation to the casing and form a neat finish for the door. With this arrangement of lockin mechanism 1 am enabledto providethe andle shank with any 1 style of handle desired without changing parts of the look. I claim A handle lock, the combination with a housing including a shank housing and a pin tumbler lock housing, the front face of the casing formed with a recess, and a specification in the presence of two subface plate formed with a projection in line scribing witnesses.
with, and adapted to enter said recess, and JOSEPH GOODMAN means extending through the face plate 5 into the casin whereby the face plate may W1tIIe$SeS1 v be rockedwit relation to the casing. J. L. BRooKE'rr,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this J. G. HYMAN.
