SAFETY DEVICE FOR BUZZ-PLANEBS.
To al?, whom t 'muy concern.'
Be it known that LYDLoN Mazunnrfrn, citizen ot the United Stated residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and *4t-ate of "Lalitoi-nia. have invented certain new and useful lniprovements in Safety Devices for Buzz-laners, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention is a device for guiding` the work i aratus.
Y @ne ot' the objects ot' the invention is to provide a movable guard positioned over tie knives of a buzz planer or similar apparatus in such manner that the hands of the operatorl are prevented from coming in contact with the knives. 3 A further Objectis to provide a guard of the character referred to "which will accommodate itselt' towork ot different widths.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set itforth and particularly pointed out in the claim.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is a top plan view or" a planer witlrthe guard in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevationV of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and 4C is an enlarged view of the guard mounting.
Tr`eiierring to the drawing, l indicates the base of a buzz planer of a well known type7 and the rotating cylinder' which carries the knives. the saine being driven by a suitable source et power 3. through the belt 3. A guide 4 isprovided against which the mai is forced while being worked. in a on a buzz planer or similar apterial manner well known.
Pivoted to the planer table 6 is a guard 5. said table having Van angle plate i'. provided with a boss 8 through which the pivot rod 9 passes. Said rod 9 is provided with a plate 'l0 which is attached to the bottom ot the .Quard in suitable manner. such as by means oi the screws il. rlhis construction enables the guard to be moved in a horizontal plane. and by platingshims between the boss 8 and the plate l0. .he guard may be raised to any height above the table, as is shown by e dotted position 2. In case the guard 5. by reason of its weight should sag, a set screw 19 has been provided in the plate and has one end thereof in abutting engagement with the guard. By adjust- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Maf. 15, 1921.
Application filed .Tune 4.-, 1918.
Serial No. 238,130.
nient of said screw the guard will be elevated or adjusted relative to the plate to take up the sag. In order to keep a constant pressure on a timber being operated upon, a weight l2 is provided, which is secured to the guard by means orn a cable i3, fastened to i hook 14C Von the underside of the guard.
The cable passes under the table 6, over a l Vpulley l5 anddown to the weight l2.
the weight keeping the guard always againstl the timber and over the rotating knives, protecting the operator. `Vhen the timber has s passed through the machine, it is placed on top or" the guard and returned to its first po-v sition, the hands of the operator never coming near the knives. To compensate for warping of the guard, a set screw 19 is put through the plate lOyand enables the guard 5 to be raised if desired. Y
Having thus explained the nature Aof the invention. and described an opera dive man# ner 01"' constructing and using the same although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all ot the forms of its use. what is claimed is -l guard for planing machine, comprising an attaching bracket. a plate secured bv Aastening elements to one end of the guard, a depending spindle rigid with' said plate and journaled in said bracket for rotatably supporting the guard, an adjusting screwV threaded in said plate and engaging said Aguard. said set-screw being located in the plate relative to said fastening elements and said guard `to adjust the latter relative to the plate in case of sagging, said spindle being elongated and slid able in said bracket to permit the insertion of shims to elevate the guard relative to said bracket.
ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
