ROY O. BICQUEEN AND JOSETEH A, BATSON, OF IVIEIEII- IIS TEXAS FUEL-VALVE LQCK FOE MQTOE-GARS;
Specification of Letters l atent; lgPgjbQn-iefi 1W2 15,
Application filed July 12, 1920; Serial No. 395,551.
T 0 (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BOY U. MoQm-znx and Josnrn A. BATSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Hall, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Valve Looks for Motor-Cars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to valves, and more especially to looks for the same; and the object of the invention is to produce an extremely simple valve and lock mechanism for application to the gasolene line of a motor car between its tank and carbureter, so that it is necessary to insert a key and give it a quarter turn in order for the gasolene to flow, and it is necessary to turn the key to close the valve and shut ofi the flow of gasolene before the operator can remove the key when he is about to leave his car.
Details of the preferred construction of this attachment are set forth below and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
Let B designate a board such as that on which the instruments are mounted or one 7 of the floor boards, and let G designate the the application of this attachment. Near its forward end the casing is internally threaded as at 3, then shouldered as at 4 and smooth as at 5, and around its smooth portion it is preferably threaded as at 6. The valve plug 10 fits rotatably within the bore of the casing and has through its rear end a passage 12 adapted to aline with the two nipples when the valve is open so that the gas may flow. Near its front end the plug is reduced to form a shoulder-14, forward of which it is extended as at 15 and made angular at its extremity as by a nick 16.
The lock 20 is preferably of the cylindrical type capable of being operated by the insertion of a key 21 and its rotation for 90, and its details areunimportant.- At its rear end this look is externally threaded at 23 to fit the threads '3 in the casing 1, and its rear extremity is chambered as at 25. to
receive the extension 15 of the plug. The
rotary element of the look (not shown) is connected with the plug where the latter is made angular or nicked as at 16. Interposed between the annular end 24 of the lock and the shoulder 14 of the plug is a thrust bearing, of balls or otherwise, as shown at 26; and therefore when the lock is screwed into the casing as far as possible, the plug is held in the casing by said thrust bearing quite reliably and is yet permitted to rotate. The numeral 30 designates a shell having" a cylindrical body internally threaded as at 36 to en age the external threads 6 onthe casing, and with its front end closed except for an opening 32 which closely receives the front end of the lock 20 and exposes the keyhole as shown in Fig. l. The rear end of the shell has a flange 33 pierced with holes 34 through which may be passed bolts 35 having nuts 37 on their inner endsbehind the board B or other element to which the device is attached.
lVhen the parts are assembled as seen in Fig. 3, it is obvious that by inserting the key and turning the plug its passage 12 may be set in line with the nipples to permit the gas to flow. When the owner is about to leave his car, he turns the key for which closes the valve, and only then may he withdraw the key. without turning off the gas, he may do so. lVhile we have spoken of a key-actuated lock, it is obvious that the. lock could be of any appropriate type so long as its barrel was constructed with reference to the other parts as described herein.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a valve including a casing having alined nipples adapted to be let into a pipe, the rear end of the oas- 7 ing being closed and the front end provided with threads on its exterior, and a rotary plug within said casing having a passage adapted to be set in line with said nipples and its front end made angular at its ex- 'tremity; of a cylindrical lock inserted in the front end of said casing and connected with the angular extremity of the plug, and a shell whose body is internally threaded to engage the external threads on the casing,.110
If he prefers to leave the car 90 whosefront end inoloses said lock, and Whose rear end has a flange to be mounted on a support.
2. Thecombination with a valve including a casing having alined nipplesadapted to be let into a pipe, the rear end of the casing heing'closed and the front end provided with threads on its exterior and interior and a rotary plug Within said casing havlng a passage adapted to be set in line Y with said nipples and its front end reduced to form a shoulder and made angular at its extremity; of a lock externally threaded at its rear end to engage the internal threads in the casing and adapted for connection With the angular end of its plug, a bearing between the lock and the shoulder on such plug, and a shell engaging the external threads of the casing and having an open ing in its front end for said lock.
In testimony whereof, We affix our signatures, in the presence of two Witnesses.
ROY O. MCQUEEN. JOSEPH A. BATSON.
