MINERS LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921b Application filed October 2'7, 191?. Serial No. 198,863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREEN TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Screven, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in miners or carbid lamps.
The object of this invention is to provide a miners lamp capable of being used by miners, thus obviatingthe necessity of the use of oil lamps, candles or the like articles and doing away with the use of matches.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carbid lamp, which is equipped with a water and a carbid chamber and a gas chamber interposed between the water and carbid chamber and means for permitting the gas to be urged from the carbid chamber into the water chamber for forcing the water into the carbid for generating gas.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a miners lamp of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
Vith these and other objects in View, the intention consists in the novel combination anti arrangement of parts hereinafter morefully described and claimed.
Iii the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a miners lamp constructed in accordance with my 111- vention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same,
Fig. 4 is a P p Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view outlet valve.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a lamp in its entirety and it comprises a cylindrical carbid receptacle 6, which is provided in its top wall with an opening, to the wall of which is secured an annular flange 7, which is vertical in cross section and is provided with exterior screwdetail sectional view of the gas of a gas threads. A waterreceptacle 8 comprises a cylindrical body 9, which is provided with interior screwthreads to facilitate the removable securing of the water receptacle to the carbid receptacle through the medium of the flange 7. The upper end of the cylindrical body 9 flares outwardly to provide the water receptacle. The water receptacle 8 is provided intermediate its ends with a partition 10, which defines a gas chamber 11 and water receptacle or compartment 12.
A perforated battle plate 13 is placed in the upper edge of the annular flange 7 and has secured on its upper side, a felt strip 14,
which is adapted to cleanse the gas passing from the carbid receptacle into the gas chamber 11.
A tube 15 is secured to the top wall of the water compartment 12 and extends downwardly through the partition 10 and terminates below the wall of the openin in the top wall of the carbid receptacle. lhe tube is provided adjacent the partition with an opening 16, which establishes a communi- 0 cation between the water compartment 12 and carbid receptacle. The lower end of the tube 15 converges as at 17 to provide a valve seat.
An operating rod 18 is slidably arranged in the tube 15. The lower end of the rod 18 is substantially conical shape as at 19 to constitute a valve, which is normally seated on the valve seat 17 formed in the tube. The upper end of the operating rod is bent angula-rly as at 20 to provide an operating handle, and the rod 18 adjacen'. the handle is provided with screwthreads 21, adapted to be engaged by threads in the acking nut 22 p to facilitate the movement of the valve end of the lever upon rotation of the rod by the handle 20, thus it can be seen that the valve 19 may be unseated to permit the water from the water compartment 12 to run down through the tube into the carbid receptacle 6 and generate gas, which will pass up through the bafile plate 13 through the felt, strip 14 into the gas chamber and be thorou hly cleansed during its passage.
burner 23 is secured to the cylindrical body 9 and communicates with the gas chamber. The outer end of the burner is extended laterally therefrom and is surrounded by a reflector 24.
An ignition means 25 is secured to the re- 11o fiector 24 and is located directly under the end of the burner 23, whereby the gas passing through the burner 23 may be ignited by the sparks from the ignition device 25 when it is desired to use the lamp.
The top wall of the water compartment 12" is provided with an opening in which is removably secured, a plug 26, which has interposed between itself and. the wall of the compartment, a rubber gasket 27, whlch causes a. water tight joint therebetween.
The plug 26 is adapted to be removed to facilitate thefilling of the compartment 12 with water. It is to be understood that the baffle plate 13 is removably fitted in the upper end of the flange 7 so as to facilitate its removal to permit the carbid receptacle 6 to be filled with carbid.
A gas pipe 28 has one end secured to the top wall of the water compartment 12 and communicates therewith. The other terminal of the gas pipe 28 is secured to and communicates with the gas chamber 11 through the wall of the body 9. A valve 29 is arranged in the pipe 28 adjacent one end thereof to facilitate the closing of the communication between the Water compartment and gas chamber. The inner end of the pipe, which is located in the water compart- ,ment has secured thereto, a felt strip 30, which prevents the water from passing up through and into the pipe.
' The pipe 28 is provided with an opening 29 which is covered by a suitable valve 30', which valve is normally held seated by a a spring arm 31' having one end secured to the pipe as at 32. An adjusting screw 38' .l is secured to the pipe as at 34 and cooperates with the spring arm 31 to permit the valve to be regulated so as to permit the valve to be unseated upon increased pressure within the tank or'pipe, thus avoiding ing anoperatin means disposed exteriorly explosion by the accumulation of too much gas.
felt strip 141 and terminate into the gas In operation, the gas generating in the chamber 9 from where it can pass out through the burner 23 and be ignited through the ignition device 25,.it being understood that it is only necessary to seat the valve [5), cutting off the sup-ply of water to the carbid receptacle, thus stopping the generation of gas when the lamp is not to be used.
A bracket 31 is secured to the exterior of the water compartment 12 and has its opposite ends curved outwardly and inwardly to facilitate the attachingof the lamp to a miners cap or the like.
What is claimed is:
1. A portable acetylene generator and lamp having superposed water and carbid chambers and an interposed gasch amber, from the latter of which extends a burner "tube, and between which and the carbid chambers and an lnterposed gas chamber, 7
from the latter of which extends a burner tube, and between which and the carbid chamber is located a gas strainin medium, consisting of a'perforated bafiie pTate and a superposed felt web arranged in parallelism therewith, a water feed pipe connecting the water and oarbid chambers and extending axially through the same and the interposed gas chamber, said water feed pipe being provided with a controlling valve havof the said cham ers and at the upper end of the feed tube, and a valved pressure pipe disposed exteriorly of and connecting t e gas and water chambers and desi ed to equalize the pressure above and be ow the contents of the latter.
Intestimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
