Description
C. W. TULLAR.
. ENVELOP. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 8, 920.
Patented Feb-22, 1921.
' lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip CHESTER TULLAR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
ENVELOP.
Application filedmarch 8, 1920. Serial No. 364,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER W. TULLAB, citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, county of ,VVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, and declare the foltion of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
sealing of the flap.
My invention relates to envelops and more particularly to the class of envelops employed for mailing circulars, catalogues and thelike in which the flap of the envelop is left unsealed to effect a saving in postal rates.
One object of, my invention is to provide means adapted to protect the contents of the envelop against accidental discharge therefrom but which does not necessitate the A further object of the invention is to provide for the protection of the contents of the envelop without adding, or materially adding to the cost of manufacture as envelops are ordinarily constructed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood'thatchanges may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed'without departing from the spirit of the same.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure l is a rear elevation of an envelop having a side opening embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 1s a s1m1lar elevation of an envelop constructed with an end opening.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of an end open-.
ing envelop employing a plural number of tongue engaging devices.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of an envelop 1n I Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented F b 22 1921 which the walls overlap sufficiently to form a reinforced engaging device thereby pro viding for increased wear. f Fig. 5 isan enlarged fragmentary crosssectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
' Fig. 6 is a like cross-sectional view on lin 6-6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a view of a blank for a side open ng, envelop.
Fig.8 isa view of a blank for the envelopshown in Fig. 4. of the drawings.
. Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings A, denotes an envelop, B, the usual side or end flap, slitted as at B to receive'an engag ing tongue 0, integralwith the back wall ofthe envelop, If desired an envelop may be constructed with a plural number of en ag ing tongues C, as indicated in Fig. 3 o the drawings, thus preventing the loss of any relatively small articles that may be inclosed in the envelop.
To provide the engaging tongue C, the portions formin the back of the envelop may be constructe so as to overlap, as indicated in Figs. 4, 6, and 8 of the drawing. 1
Having indicated the several parts by reference letters, it will be seen that upon filling the envelop with the circular matter to be mailed, the sender turns in the flaps so as for increased use-or wear of to overlap the contents of the envelop, and 1 then inserts the engaging tongue 0 in the slit B of the flap. The mouth of-the envelop is thus secured against gaping, thereby protecting. its contents from accidental disc arge. I
It will be noted that practically no ad- .ditional expense'is added by my invention to the cost of manufacturing envelops. The engaging tongue is constructed from that portion of the sheet usually cut away in formmg the back ,wall of the envelop; while a saving is 'eflected by eliminating the 'cost of clips or other engaging devices together with the loss of time required for installing these devices upon the envelops.
Having thus described my invention what 'I claim is An envelop having a relatively narrow unsealed closurefiap disposed loosely against the body of the envelop and provided with a slit, the slit in the flap being disposed adjacent one edge of the envelop body, andthe rear Wall of the envelop having a relatively short projecting ungumrned tongue adapted to extend through said slit and be wholly confined Within the envelop and free of either the closure flap or the body of the envelop, the contents of the envelop adapted to hold the tongue against the closurefiap, thereby preventing displacement of the tongue. In testimony whereof, I sign this specification; in the presence of two witnessesf CHESTER WQTULLARQ Witnesses V 'S. E. Tnouns; '1
