CHARLES H.SCHRODER, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
GRATE FOR BOILER-FURNACES.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Sermonnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burlington, in the county of "Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates for Boiler-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to grates for boiler furnaces, the object being to provide a grate made up of a series of bars e'achof which is composed of two units which maybe rocked in unison for dumping, or rocked independently for shaking up and dislodging the coal or ashes, and it consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is aview in perspective of a grate embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, a and 5 are views of two units of the grate showing respectively the units in normal position and the various positions they may assume during the movements of the two sections of the latter, and Fig. 6 is a front view of one unit and its actuating devices, the units being supported on the bearer bars.

These bars are arranged in pairs as shown and each pair 1s provided with recessed seats 7 for the end trunnions 8 of the outer section of each unit. Each outer section 9 comprises a rectangular frame provided at its front and rear sides with fingers 10 projecting inwardly toward each other as shown and stopping short of the center, and provided centrally at its ends with the recessed seats 11 for the trunnions 12 of its inner section 13. Each inner section 13 consists of a longitudinal body 14 having fingers 15 cast integral therewith'and proj ecting from the opposite sides thereof. The fingers on section 13 are arranged to intermesh with the inwardly projecting fingers 10 integral with section 9, and when the two sections 9 and 13 constituting one unit are assembled and in normal positions, present a substantially flat surface as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, sufficiently closed to support the coal thereon, but which will permit of the passage of air sufficient for combustion. of units arranged inseries, the series being arranged side by side as shown in Fig. .1.
Each section of each unit is provided with an arm cast integral therewith and depending therefrom, the arms 14 ofthe sections 9 being pivotally connectedat their lower ends to. an actuating bar 15, and the arms 16 of the sections 13 being pivotally connected to a bar 17, the bars 15* and 17 being side byside below the grate as shown in Fig. 1. The arms 14% and 16 are of substantially the same lengths and are preferably located at the same end of the units as shown so. as to permit them to be conveniently'operated in unison.
The bars 15 and 17 extend through an opening or openings in the front wall of the furnace, and each is connected to one end of a lever 18 fulcrumed to brackets 19 secured sections of the units may be rocked.
With the construction above described, it will be seen that by actuating the bar 15 all of the sections 9 of the several units of one series of grate bars will be rocked in unison, the central sections 13 remainin stationary. By reciprocating the bars 1% the central or inner sections 13 of the several units of a series will be simultaneously rocked, while the outer sections 9 will remain stationary. These movements of the inner and outer sections operate to loosen up the body or bed of coal thereon and permit the ashes to fall through the grate into the ash pit.
When it is desired to dump the coal in order to clean the grate for a new fire or for repairs, both bars 15 and 17 should be actuated simultaneously in the same direction. Each unit then turns on its trunnions 8 as shown in Fig. 5 and dumps the coal into the pit below.
With this construction the bed of coal and ashes can be more or less agitated and the ashes gotten rid of by rocking one or the other sections of the units, and the entire bed of coal can be dumped by turning the units bodily.
It is evident that slight changes may be made Without departing from the spirlt of my invention, hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the details shown and described.
Having fully described my invention what with recessed seats open at the top, and the inner section having trunnions journaled in the recessed seats in the outer section, the
said inner section also provided with integral fingers which intermesh with' the fingers on the side members of the outer section the said sections each having an integral depending arm located centrally at one end of the grate bar-for connection with rocker bars, whereby the grate bar as a whole can be rocked in either direction, or either section thereof rocked in either direction independently of the other.
2. The combination of bearer bars having open seats, grate bars each composedof an inner and an outer section, the outer section having centrally located end trunnions mounted in said open seats in the bearer bars, and also provided at its ends with centrally located recessed seats, and the inner section having centrally located end trunnions mounted in the recessed seats in the ends of the outer section, a depending arm necting the armsof the inner sections of the several grate bars, and leversconnected to the outer ends of said actuating bars and located side by side whereby they may be actuated simultaneously.
