' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
v GEORGE HOWES, OF DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BECKWITH COM- IPANY, OF DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN.
FURNACE.
Patented Feb 22; 1921.
Original application filed June 11, 1919, Serial No. 303,336. Divided and this application filed September 25,1919. Serial No. 326,369. r
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE'W. Howns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dowagiac, county of Cass, State of Mich1- gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements-in furnaces.
The main objects of this invention are to provide in a furnace an improved casing structure in which the parts are simple and economical to produce and may be assembled by an unskilled workman.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means descrlbed in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the acompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the top of the outer casing being omitted and a portion of the outer casing being broken away.
Fig. II is a detail'side perspective view of the furnace body and front plate.
Fig. III is a detail plan view showing details of the front wall and the relation of the casing thereto.
Fig. IV is a detail horizontal section on a linleporgesponding to line 4-4 of Fig. I.
1 corre sponding to line 5--5 of Fig. I, the furnace body front plate being omitted.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the furnace body in the structure illustrated is formed 7 of sections 1,2, 3 and 4. The base 5 is designed'to receive the section 1 and consti tutes the bottom of the ash pit. The outer casing base ring 6 is connected to the base 5 by the bars 7 The section 1 has a passage .8 while the upper section 4 has a fuel pasis a horizontal section on a line sage 9. The radiator 1O is mounted upon the section 4:. I
The parts are connected by means of bolts 11 and the radiator section is made adjustable as described in detail in my application for Letters Patent filed June 11, 1919, Serial No. 303,336, of which this application is a division. I provide a front plate 12 hav-.
The inner casing 18 is double walled in the structure illustrated, its lower edge being mounted on the ring 19, carried by the uprights 20 on the base bars 7. The inner casing members have lapping flanges 21 which overlap the flanges 13 and are supported by the eye bolts 22 engaged on the mner ends of the bolts 16 and which secure the front plate to the body, bolts 17 bein provided with nuts 23 on the inner sides 0 the lugs and nuts 24 on the inner sides of the eye bolts to retain the same.
The furnace illustrated is one of the one register type, the top of the outer casing not being illustrated as such top forms no part of this invention. It is sufiicient to say that the air circulates downward through the inner casing and up through the inner casing around the body and radiator.
I have shown in the accompanying drawings the inner and outer casings as formed of one piece, but in practice they may be of two or more strips having joint rings be-' 1. The combination with a furnace body,
of a front plate mounted thereon and having forwardly projecting side flanges, an outer casing attached to the edges of said flanges, spaced inner casing members having forwardly projecting overlapping flanges and means for drawing said overlapping casin member flanges against flanges of said ront plate. I
2. The combination with a furnace body,
of a front plate mounted thereon, an inner casing member having forwardly projecting flanges overlapping the flanges on said front plate, and means at the rear of said front plate for drawing said casing flanges against the front plate.
3. The combination with a furnace body provided with front plate attaching lugs, of a front plate having forwardly projecting I said securing bolts and disposed through the flanges of said inner casing member, where by said inner casing is supported and its flanges are drawn against said front plate flanges. 1
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
GEORGE w. HowEs; a. 8.]
