Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known-that I, MAN'roN T. BENTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Containers, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to metal containers especially adapted for containing liquids, and has for its object to provide a closure for a container which will be liquid tight and readily removable without special tools or appliances. A feature of the invention is also that the container is free from obstructions at the inside thereof, as no part of the devices for holding the cover lie within the vertical plane of the side wall of the container. A further feature is that the cover or closure can be replaced repeatedly if it is desired to preserve part of the contents of the container for future use. A further advantage of the invention is the simplicity and cheapness of the construction of the parts, as they can all be pressed or stamped from sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the closure. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is a detail in section showing the cover applied, before fastening. Fig. 4 is a similar View, after fastening.
The wall of the container is'indicated at 6, and it is pressed or shaped near its upper end to produce an outstanding shoulder or ledge 7, and at the outeredge thereof an upstanding flange 8 which is cut out or notched to form a plurality of tongues 9.
Normally, these tongues extend in the same plane as the flange 8 and are parallel to the wall of the container.
The cover may have the form of a stamping comprising a plate or body 10 at the edge of which is an upstanding flange 11 of proper diameter to fit snugly within the opening at the'top of the container Wall 6, and this flange 11 connects at its upper edge with an-outstanding annular shoulder 12 which in turn joins an upwardly extending flange 13, the width of theshoulder 12 being substantially the same as that of the shoulder 7 and a flange 13 being adapted to fit within the flange 8 and the tongues 9.
A ring gasket 14: is inserted between the shoulders 7 and 12.
In closing the container, the gasket and cover are fitted in place within the flange 8 and tongues 9 as shown in Fig. 3. Then the flange 8 is bent inwardly in closing, to gether with the flange 13, as shown in Fig. 4, and the tongues 9 are then, bent or rolled over the edge of the flange 13'as shown in Figs. 1 and 4:. The effect of the inward bending of the flange 8 is to produce a wedge lock against the flange 13, and also to compress the packing 14 laterally, and the effect of bending the tongues 9 over the edge of the flange 13 is to give a hook lock and also to compress the packing 14 vertically, between the shoulders and 12. A very tight and secure joint is thus produced. To release the cover the tongues}? are first bent back to original position and then the flange 8 is bent outwardly to its original position, thereby releasin the cover which can then be lifted out. An it can again be sealed in the same manner as above described, as no parts have to be broken or mutilated.
The closure will be found very effective for sealing paint cans or other containers for liquids, but of course is capable for use in any other suitable relation. Also the form and proportions of the parts may be varied within the scope of the invention. Thus a gasket round in cross-section instead of square or oblong may be used. No limitation is implied because of the particular device shown.
I claim: I
1. A container having an outwardly extending shoulder at its open end and an upstanding flange at the outer edge of said shoulder terminating in tongues, and a cover.
having an inner flange fitting within the container below the said shoulder, an outstanding shoulder at the'upper end of said inner flange fitting within the flange on the container, and a packing ring confined between said shoulders and flanges, the tongues being arranged to be bent down over the outer edge of the cover.
2. A container provided at its upper end with an outstanding shoulder, an upstanding flange at the outer edge of said shoulder, terminating in spaced tongues, and a cover having an inner flange fitting within the container below said shoulder, an outer flange fitting within said flange of the container, and a shoulder connecting said flanges, and a gasket .confined between said shoulders and flanges, the tongues being hooked inwardly over the edge of the outer flange of the cover, and said outer flange and the flange of the container being pressed inwardly to form a wedge lock, substantially as. described.
