To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV KOMAREK, a citizen vof the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chains for Briquet-Machines, of which the following is' a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 10, 10 designate the coperating pressure rolls or driuns of a briquet machine, and carried by the peripheries of saiddrums are mold rings l1 in which are formed mold cavities 1-2. Formed between these cavities are circumferentially disposed grooves 13 and arranged upon one of the drums and positioned in the grooves 13 therein are the chains of my improved construction. l
Each chain is made up of a seriesof flat Y metal links 14C having smooth fiat outer faces 15 and rounded ends- 16; The inner faces of the'end portions of each link are recessed or cut away as designated by 17 in'order toy accommodate the corresponding end portions-of the next adj acentjlinks. This construction provides V'a centrally arranged transversely disposed rib 18 on the inner face of eachflink, the end portionsof said 'rib being widened as designated by19.` s
Formedthroughl the end portions of each platefli and in thecenters of the cut-away portions 17 are rivet holes 20: and formed in the. inner face ofeach link within thecutaway portions and concentric with saidfrivet holes are annular grooves or recesses 21. Thus, when the links arefittedtogether or with the end -portions thereof overlapping eachother, theA grooves 2lin .the overlying end portions-.ofapair of-the links constitute a circular chamber which is occupied by a bearing ring '22 of suitable wear-resisting material, such as bronze.v :This bearingring is preferably` forcedinto the groove., of one link before the latter is associated with the next adjacent link and thus said ring is anchored in one link and the next adj aoent link bears upon the projecting portion of said ring rather than upon the adjacent fiat face of the link in which the ring is embedded.
As a result of such construction, a relatively large wear resisting bearing is provided between the links and said bearing is effective in relieving the rivet between the links from all shearing strains. j
- The rivet holes in one set of links have their outer ends enlarged as designated by 23 in order to receive the heads of the rivets, andthe outer ends of the holes in the opposite set of links are chamfered as designated by 2li in order to receive the upset ends of theV connecting. rivets. The rivets which connect the links are of the type illustrated in Fig. 4, and the main body portion of each rivet is provided with an annular shoulder 25 which coincides with the joint between the inner faces of the overlapping portions of a pair of the links, such construction beingef'fective in preventing the links from being rigidly connected when the ends of the rivets are upset and forced into the chamfered portions 24. Each rivet is provided with an enlarged head 26 which occupies the enlarged portion 23 of the rivet hole. After the rivets have been properly set, it is essential that their outer ends be machined or smoothed down so that they lie flush with the smooth flat outer faces 15 of the links.
Inasmuch as the chains are intended for use upon a drum or pressure roll, it is desirable, though not essential, that the edges of the links forming said chain be curved lengthwise, and said )curved edges .bgeing Y formed on arcs of circles concentric with the VYaxis vof, the drum on which the chains operate. As a result, the inner portions of the chains completely ll and tit snugly within the grooves of the drum upon which they are positioned. j
It will be'understood that as the pressure rolls 0r drums rotate to bring the Ainold cavities into coincidence with each other to form the briquets, the chains' arranged between the coinciding mold cavities form the end wallsv for such cavities, and consequently said chains receive all lateral pressure or pressure lengthwise through the bodies of the briquets at the time Vthe latter are subjected to highest pressure. Inasmuchas the chains are disposed between the rowsA of mold cavities, the pressure upon the material between the rolls is equal in both directions, or against the side-faces of the chains. Consequently, the stresses due to high compression are neutralized `throughout the series. o'flA chains, and as a result, briquetsof'uniform density are produced. i
' Chains of` my improved construction can be easily and cheaply produced, and are very effective in performing theirintended functions. Y
It will be readily understood that minor changes-in the size, form and construction of the various partsiofrmy improved chain can be made and substituted for those herein'shown 'and' described, withoutV departing from the spirit of my invention,l the scope of which is set forth n the appended claims.
