IMPROVEMENT IN TROWELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,878. dated March 18, IS7-3.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SUMNER F. STREETER, of Bernardston, in the county of Franklin and Stat-e of Massachusetts, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Shank for Trowels, Src.; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists mainly in the peculiar construction of an improved shank for trowels and other similar articles, whereby it is adapted to serve also as a ferrule for protecting and jstrengthening the handle, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a plan view of my improvement as applied to a trowel, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use4 my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation. l
A represents the blade of the Mtrowel or other similar implement, constructed in any suitable manner, and of any proper material. B represents the shank, the foot b of which is securely attached to the blade in any proper manner. Its head, instead of terminating'in a pointed rod in the usual manner, Ais formed into a tapering socket, b1, provided with a central orifice, b2, as shown. C represents the handle, constructed of any proper material, but preferably ot' Wood, which is provided with a central opening through it from end to end, and with ends adapted to enter the sock! et of the shank and to receive the ferrule D, as shown. The handle is securely attached to the shank by means of the rod E, provided with an enlargement at one end, and with a Screw-thread at the other, as shown, the rod being held in place by means of the ferrule D, which is provided with a central threaded orifice, by means of which it is screwed onto the end of the rod E, as shown.
