UNITED Slrh'l'hd CHARLES BERNARD, OF GARY, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application filed September 14, 1920. Serial No. 410,165.
2 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that}, CHARLES BERNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench and contemplates an improvement whereby the jaws thereof may be quickly adjusted in respect to each other and to generally improve upon the structure thereof by providing a wrench which will'be extremely simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, one which is eilicieut and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Numerous other objects will become apparent from the annexed specification and it will be seen that the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, and
Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken on the lines 2 2 and 33 of Fig. 1 respectively.
Referring to the drawing; in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the handle of the wrench whi" h is provided at one end with a head 2. A fixed is mounted upon the upper end of the head 2 as indicated at 8 a d disposed at one side thereof. A projection l is orovided upon the head 2 and is formed with the rib 5 having ledges upon both sides thereof which are serrated so as to form the teeth 6. This rib 5 may be either formed integral with the head 2 or separated therefrom so as to be replaceable.
T he movable jaw 7 is provided with a slot 8 as is shown in Fig. 2 which will ride over "the rib 5 thus preventing the lateral movement of the jaw 7 in respect to the head 2. This movable jaw 7 is therefore slidably mounted upon the rib 5 and'the lower portion of the jaw 7 upon each side of the groove 8 is serrated so as to form a piece which will mesh with the teeth 6 and prevent the sliding movement of the movable aw 7 As thus far described it will be seen that the movable jaw 7 may beliited and moved closer or farther from the fixed jaw 3 as may be desired. In order to hold the movable jaw 7 down in fixed engagement with the head 2 by having the teeth of the movable jaw in mesh with the teeth 6 on the head 2 l" have provided a guide 9 which is le shaped and has its ends 'pivotally mounted. upon the head 2 by means of a rivet 10. The side portions of the movable jaw 7 are provided with the grooves 11 into which the legs of the guide 9 extend so that the jaw 7 may he slid therebetween. A leaf spring 13 having an outwardly bent portion 14- is situated upon the end of the nose 4 and is held in place by means of a screw 15'. lhus it will be seen that'the outward proj eating portion i l will engage the upper side of the connecting piece of the guide 9 for holding the movable jaw 7 down into engagement with the head 2.
When it is desired to use the wrench the movable jaw 7 will preferably be spaced as far from the fixed jaw 3 as possible and the nut upon which it is desired to use the wrench will be situated therebetween. By pressing inwardly upon the outwardly projecting portion 1 the movable aw 7 may be pushed toward th nut and into form engagement therewith since the guide 9 will now allow same to rise slightly so as to pass over the teeth 6 on the head 2. These teeth 6, of course, will be so slanted as to allow the movable jaw 7 to be pushed inwardly but prevent same from bei g pushed outwardly without first lift ng the jaw.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the wrench wil be readily u derstood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the soir t of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described oth r than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A wrench comprising a head. a fixed jaw mounted thereon. a movable jaw slidably mounted on the head, means for preventing lateral movement of the movable jaw a guide pivotally mounted upon the head and having the movable jaw slidable therein, and means for engaging the guide so as to hold the movable jaw fixed on the head.
2. A wrench comprising a head, a fixed jaw mounted thereon, a movable jaw slidably mounted on the head, means for preventing lateral movement of the movable jaw, a guide pivotally mounted upon the head, the movable jaw provided with grooves for receiving the guide so as to be slidable therein, and means for'engaging the guide so as to hold the movable jaw fixed. on the head.
3. A wrench comprising a head, a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw slidably mounted on the head, means for preventing lateral movement of the movable jaw, a guide being Substantially d-shaped and having its ends pivotally mounted upon the head, the movable jaw provided with grooves for receiving the legs of the guide so as to be slidable therebetween, and means for engaging the guide so as to hold the movable jaw fixed on the head.
A wrench comprising a head, a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw slidably mounted on the head, means for preventing lateral movement of the movable jaw, a guide piv otally mounted upon the head, the movable jaw provided with grooves for receiving the guide so as to be slidable therein, and a spring fixedly attached to the head and having an outward-projecting portion for en- 121 fixed on the head.
o. A wrench comprising a head, a fixed jaw thereon, a rib mounted on the head, a movable jaw having a slot therein, for receiving the rib so as to be slidably mounted upon the head, a guide pivotally mounted on the head, the movable jaw provided with grooves for receiving the guide so as to be slidable therein, and means for engaging the guide so as to hold the movable jaw fixed on the head.
6. it wrench comprising a head, a fixed jaw thereon, a rib mounted on the head, a movable jaw having a slot therein for receiving the rib so as to be slidably mounted upon the head, a guide having a substantially ill-shape and. having its ends pivotally mounted upon the head, the movable jaw provided with grooves for receiving the legs of the guide so as to be slidable therebetween, and means for engaging the guide so as to hold the jaw fixed on the head.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
