W WVl MACFARLANE. TRANSLATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED N0\f.22.1911.

WILLIAM` W. MACFARLANE, yO PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRANSLATING DEVCE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
raient-ea nee. s, 192i.
Application led November 22, 1917. Serial No. 203,379.
To all fao/tom t may conccwt.'
Be it known that I,W1Li.m3r Mic- FARLANE, a citizen oi' theUnited States or' America, anda resi dent'of Philadelphia, in the county of yPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful '.lranslating Device, oi' which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to translating devices or induction coils and has more particularly reference to a device of such low resistance that aV relatively large if'olumeoi" current may be passed through it to create a relatively powerful effect even though the current be of low voltage.
The convolutions of theV windings receii= ing the current must have a relatively largey cross section, say, one-eighth or threeeighths oi an inch so that there maybe as little resistance as possible to the flow. `To accomplish this, a veryheavy conductor must be employed. Therefore, incre than a single layer of convolutions is inconvenient and this limits the number of ampere turns.
The principal feature of the invention re sides in the use of a plurality of helices, the convolutions oit which are of relatively large cross sectional area and in so combining them that a great number of ampere turns, without increase of the resistance of the translating device, is possible. This is effected by connecting a plurality ot helices or coils in parallel each having a core and the cores of the various coils being preferably connected to a unitary pole-piece so as to concentrate thel magnetic fiuX.
Another feature oi the .invention consists of an induction coil having a plurality oit windings or helices connected in parallel and a winding in inductive relation to the plurality of parallel windings.
Other features of invention will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a View partly in elevation and partly in section of a translating device or induction coil embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of one of a group of helices employed.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line w-L'l of Fig. 3.
1 indicates a helix of good conducting material, preferably formed by cutting a spiral groove in a bar to provide convolutions, the adjacent convolutions being separated by an air gap that may act as insulation. After the spiral groove is cut inthe bar, the cen tral portion is entirely removed so as to admit of the introduction ot a core 2 sur rounded by an insulation sleeve 3. ii plurality ci these helices are introduced through openings in the standards ilso as to iferm a group ot parallel coils. The standards l may, and in the present instance do` act as conductors by means of which current is introduced into the helices l that are` when mounted in the standards, electrically connected thereto. The ends oi? cores 2 project beyond standards i and are proif'ided with a unitary pole-piece 5 that serves to concentrate the magnetic iiux. lt will be understood that the device so far described is an electro-magnet and may be used to operate one or more armatures (i to close and open a circuit at contact 7.
A winding 8 is placed around the group of helices, when the device is to be used as a low resistance winding of an induction coil, thereby bringing it in inductive relation to the helices.
By the means shown, a relatively large current, which may be of relatively low voltinay be passed through the helices. It may then, by the ineans described, be transformed into a current oi relatively small volume and relatively high voltage.
The device been found exceedingly useful in telephone systems, trainkcontrol systems, etc.
I claim:
n l. A translating device including: a plurality of coils, each coil consisting of a single layer oi? convolutions, two terminal members common to all the coils and to which said coils are electrically connected in parallel` a core for each coilinsulated therefrom, and nieans for concentrating the magnetic flux of said cores.
2. A translating device including: a plurality of coils electrically connected in parallel, each coil consisting of a single layer of convolutions of relatively large cross section and of low resistance, a. core for each coil, and means for concentrating the magnetic flux ot the cores.
3. A translating device including: a plurality of naked coils insulated from each other by an air gap, each coil consisting of a single layer of convolutions, adjacent con-- Volutions being; separated 'from each other bu' an air grap, and means electricall)v connecting said coils in parallel.
l. A translating device including: a plurality ot naked coils insulated trom each other bj.' an air gap, each coil consisting` ot a single layer ot' conrolntions. adjacent coni'olutions being separated from each other by an air gap, means electricallj,v connecting' said coils in parallel, a core for each coil, and means t'or concentrating the magnetic flux ot said cores.
ln electroniagnet including: a pluralitiY of separate coils. a supporting meinber .i'or each end ot the coils? said supporting members serving also as common terminal conducting' members t'or the plurali@v or coils. and a core tor each ot said coils extendine through said terminal supporting menibers` and insulated therefrom.
(j. )in clectromagnet including: a pluralitj.'v of separate coils, a supjortinal meinljier foreach endet the coils, said supporting ineinbers serving also as common terminal conducting members tor the pluralityY ot coils, a core for each et said coils extending through said terminal conducting members and insulated therefrom, and a pole piece common te all the cores, said cores being joined to said pole pieces.
translatinl detice comprising: a plu ralityY ot parallel cores, ay winding` tor each core, the several windings beings) electrically connected in parallel, and a Winding surrounding all the cores and in inductive relaseparate core7 the several coils beingr elecn trically connected in parallel, and a winding surrounding all the coils and in inductive relation thereto.
l0. A translating` device comprising: a pluralityY oit coils, each coil consistingof a single layer ol" convolutions of relativel;Y arge cross-sectional area and of low resistance extending;` around a separate core, the several coils beingr electrically connected in parallel, and a winding surrounding all the coils and in inductive relation thereto.
Signed at Moncton, in the Province of Nenfrunswiek, Dominion ot' Canada, this 19t-h day ot' November, 1917.
