HOSTETTLER, OI COLUMBUS, OHIO;
, PASTEUBIZ I NG APPARATUS.
. Specification oi Letters Patent. f
Patented Fat. 1, 1921.
Application filed September 6, 1919; Serial Ito. 82,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Hos'rnrruin, a citizen of the United States, residpasteurizlng beer, nearbeer andother beverages generatlng or containing gas, in such a way as to accomplish that result economically and elfectively and without altering the palatability of the liquid treated.
special object of the invention is to utilize the heat of the pasteurized liquid to pre-v liminarily heat the cold untreated liquid and conversely to promote the cooling of the heated liquid with the 'cold untreated liquid thereby saving fuel and the necessity of using a circulated or flowing cooling medium for the treated liquid. Another object is-an improved form of pasteurizing vessel.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed In the accompanying drawing the view illustrates partially in elevation and partially in section an apparatus embodying my invention.
In-said view 1 designates a heater for the liquid of ordinary form and 2 a cooler also of ordinary form. This heater can be provided with a steam inlet as at 1.
Arranged vertically between the heater and cooler is the pastenrizing vessel or cylinder3, preferably porcelain lined and of a construction adapted to conserve the heat of the liquid to bepasteurized. A pipe 4 discharges into the upper end of the cylinder 3.
and draining outlet 7.
he cylinder 3 contains a stationary screw 5 extending substantially the entire length thereof, said screw fitting within the vessel or lyin at its edges close to the wall of the cylinder and being of slow itch as shown so as to provide .a long inc ined passage for the liquid through the cylinder thereby prolonging or retarding its flow and preventing much mixing thereof.
6 designates a large inclosed tank which may contain water or other suitable material and shown as havin a supply inlet Within said tank the outlet or are two coiled pipes Sand having their coils alternating. As compared with the tank the coils are made small so as not to extenslvely modify the temperature of the water 1n the tank. Where beer or nearbear or other liquid that should be kept cold is to be treated the coil of the lower pipe 8 is extended as shown at. 8 toward a cellar where a pump 10 is installed to impel the beer through the coil 8 and through an extension 8 of the upper coil to the lower portion 'of' the heater 1. Connected with the lower end of the cylinder 3 is a ipe 11 leading to a 'pum 12, which is connected wit an extension 9*. of the pipe 9 so that the hot liquid from the pasteurizing vessel 3 can be pumped through said pipe 9. and thence discharge through an extension 9 of the uppermost coil of said pipe 9. The pipe 9 is connected with the final cooler 2.
Thermometers 13, 14 and 15. upon the heater, pasteurizing vessel and cooler, respectively, are provided for indicating the temperature of the liquid in those parts, sothat the operation for successful pasteurizing can be conducted accordingly. The temperature for pasteurization and the time of application of temperature are well understood. The temperature is obtained by regulating the heating steam and the time necessary by regulating the flow.
Suitable valves, asshown, are provided 7 9 below the coils 8 and the placing of them in close proximity to each other greatly promotes the warming of the liquid from the cellar and the coolin of the liquid from the coils 8 and 9, that is with the successive coils pasteurizer. This e ects a large economy pf fuel at theheater and a saving ofpower 1n pumping water for cooling pur oses." The water in the large tanks 6'nee seldom be renewed but if a particular temperature thereof for special purposes should needed pasteurizing vessel to prevent the escape of gas from those liquids containing gas, said means being indicated at the upper end of the pasteurizmg vessel where 16 deslgnates the gas inlet pipe and 17 a gage for observing the ressure.
ith this apparatus it is obvious that the pasteurizing process can be carriedon continuously from the chip cask to the racking machine.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a pasteurizing apparatus, the combination of a heater for the liquid to be pasteurized, an upright pasteurizing vessel having a chamber witha fixed screw of slow pitch fitting therein to form an extended passage, a conductor for the heated liquid dischar ing into the upper end of thechamber, sai chamber provided wlth an exit for the pasteurized liquid at its lower end.
2. In pasteurizing apparatus the combination of a heater, a pasteurizing vessel, a 4
, each other wherebly tank, and a pair of distinct coils of pipe in said tank, one coil connected with the heater for the passageof cold liquid to the heater and the other coil for the'passage of hot pasteurized liquid from the pasteurizing vessel, said pipes having their coils alternating with each other 'andm proximity to each other whereby the cold liquid in one coil is warmed teurized liquid from the pasteurizing vessel,
said pipes having their coils in proximity to coil is warmed by t e hot liquid in the other.
4. In a pasteurizing apparatus, the combination of a heater for the liquid to be pasteurized, an upright pasteurizing vessel having a cylindrical chamber with a fixed screw of slow pitch fitting therein to form 'an extended passage, a conductor for the heated liquid discharging into the upper end of the cylindrical chamber, said chamber provided with an exit for the pasteurized liquid at its lower end.
