Description
W. N. SLEIC'HER.
ANCHOR YOKE FOR NON-SKID CHAINS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, I920.
Patented Feb. 1,1921.
Inventor NNITED TA t TE T OFFICE Y To all whom it may concern L a 1 Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. SLE cHEn, a citizen of the United States, resid1n at Troy, in the county of R'ensselaer and. tate ,oi New York, have inventednew and useful Improvements "in Anchor-Yokes for Non-Skid Chains, of which the following is a s ecification.
eference may be had to the accompany .ing drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
This invention relates to the type of nonskid devices employing short cross-chains connected at their ends with anchor-yokes mounted upon a convenient portion of the wheel.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an anchorage for the end-links of the cross-chains to which said links can be readily attached and from which they can be readily intentionally detached, but from which their accidental detachment is practically impossible.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in cross-section of the telly of a wheel with a tire mounted thereupbn showing in elevation a cross-chain secured to the Wheel by means of my improved anchor-yoke applied to a spoke of the wheel.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the anchor-yoke detached, illustrating the manner in which the anchoring links of the crosschain are applied to the anchor-posts on the yoke.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the a11chor-yoke.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the telly, 2 is a spoke, 3 is the rim, and lthe shoe of the tire of an automobile wheel.
My improved anchor-yoke is preferably made in two parts, 5 and 6, of general. semicircular form. adapted to embrace between them one of the spokes, 2, of the wheel and to be clamped thereupon by means of screw bolts, 7, connecting together ears, 8, on the member, 5, with respective ears, 9, on the These anchor-posts extend inwardly on opposite sides of the spokes, 2, and each is formed WlthtWO transversely elongated en Each ofthese anchor-posts is adapted to. recelve a llllk, 11*, which can be applied to the posts by first bringing the longltudinal axis of thelink parallel with the longitudi nal axis of the outermost enlargement, 12, in
which position the link can be passed over the enlargement, 12, and then swinging the link around the post until the longitudinal axis of the link is parallel with the longitudinal axis of the enlargement, 13, in which position the link can be passed over said enlargement, 13.
When the chain, 11, and the end-links, 11, assume their normal positions after the endlinks have been thus mounted upon the anchor-posts, 10, the chain will be securely retained upon the wheel until intentionally removed by disconnecting the end-links, 11, from the anchor-post by a reversal of the several movements by which said'links were applied to the anchor-posts. The positions which the end-links are required to take in passing over the respective enlargements, 12 and 13, are unnatural positions in the operation of the chain in use upon the runnin vehicle, so that accidental escape of the links,
11, from the anchor-posts is practically impossible.
The device is rendered even more efiective by employing chains with twisted links as shown, as twisted links must be more accurately positioned in passing over the enlargements in planes oblique to the axis of the yoke.
For certain purposes of the invention however, chains having ordinary plain links may be employed, and the enlargements on the anchor-posts may be in any desired plane generally transverse with respect to the anchor-posts.
By the use of my invention very. slack cross-chains may be emplo ed without danger of their becoming acci entally detached from the anchor-posts, the use of slack chains being desirable in devices of this kind, because the chain is thereby permitted p ofthe yoke as shown in F 1g. 1, and their longitudinal axes j.-"- PatentedyFeb. 1,1921. freedom to position between the tire and the road-bed instead of being held to a a substantially definite pointon the shoe at all times. -VVith a slack chain the wear is dis tributed over a greater area of the tire than i with a tightly fittingchain.
' Vlfli'at l cl-ainr as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An anchor-yoke for non-skid chains, hayinga chain-linkren-gaging post formed with: two transversely elongated enlarge-- nlentsat different distances from. its base i with their longitudinalaxes at anaangle to each other.
2. Ananchor-yoke for non-skid chains, having a chain-link-engaging post formed Wli3h; -tW0 enlargements at different distances "--,from its-base, said enlargements being in planes oblique t0 the axis of the yoke and elongated; one in a direction at an angle to the other. I
3. The combination with a non-skid chain; of an anchor-yoke formed with two transversely elongatedenlargements at dif- -ferent distances from its base, one adapted to receive a link of the chain in one position of said link, and the other to receive said link when swung around the post to another position.
4. The combination with a non-skid chain having twisted links; of an anchor-yoke formed with two enlargements at different distances from its base, said enlargements being in planes oblique to the axis of the post, and elongated, one in a direction at an angle to the other, requiring a twisted link of said chain to be presented in different angular positions to pass the respective enlargements.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of A ril, 1920.
WILLIAM SLEICHER.
