GARMEN'r-HANGER.
LMV/,062.
Specification of Letters Patent.
vApplication iled April 21, 1920. Serial No. 375,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known lthat I, MALVIN LIGHTER, a citizen, of the United States, residin in New York city in the county of New Ork and @tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and concise description.
lllly invention relates to garment hangers, my more particular purpose being to provide a garment hanger of such form and construction as toenable it to be made up mainly of suitable sheet material such as cardboard or pasteboard, or some equivalent thereof, as hereinafter described, and yet provided with one or more strengthening ,-memloers, preferably metal, and so formed and arranged as to afford, in the completed article a maximum of strength and durability, combined with lightness, simplicity' and cheapness. My` device can be readily made up in quantity.
eference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
s and in which like reference characters indi.-
cate like parts, throughout the' several figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of my invention, showing the device as partly broken away.
Fig. l.a is a section Bn the line c-a of Fig.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. yl, and
shows a form of my device different from that appearingin Fig. 1 by the addition of a reinforcing strip of metal.. Fig. 3 is a similar view of still another form of my device, in which I use two reinforcing strips of metal.
Fig. 4 shows another form of mydevice, in which there are three reinforcing strips of metal and in which the hanger` is pro-L vided with a slot for useJ in suspending a garment. v Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
In the form shown in Fig. 1 there are two leaves 5, 6, each having a substantially crescent shape, and made of cheap material,
preferably cardboard or pasteboard. Be
tween these leaves is a metallic plate 7 provided with a hole 8, and made of a single integral piece. The plate 7 of metal 1s sandwiched in between the two leaves 5, 6, after the contiguous faces thereof have been treated t0 a coating of glue or other adheslve material. The application of the lue, which is in liquid form, slightly softens t e leaves 5, 6, or at least the contiguous faces'thereof, and renders the same for the momentrather spongy in texture. This done the device, as' a whole, is subjected to pressure, either by passing it between rollers or by squeezing it bodily in an appropriate press. It is preferably al lowed to stay underlpressure until the glue thoroughly. dries. he pressure should be ksufficient to cause the` plate 7 to become embedded in the contiguous faces of the leaves, so that the finished device is substantially uniform in thickness throughout.
I find by actual trial that the device shown in Fig. 1 is very strong and at the same time very light. The hole 8 of plate l is in registry wlth two holes 8a with which the leaves 5, 6 are provided, as may be understood from Fig. la.
The form of my device appearing in Fig.
2 is a coat hanger made up of parts similar to those of the. form shown in F ig. l, but with the addition of a reinforcing strip 9, made of thin sheet metal, preferably steel, and in this particular instance provided with beveled ends, 10.
Patented Feb. 1," 1921.
, In making up the form shown in Fig. 2,
theglue is appliedas before, to the contiguous faces of the cardboard or pasteboard members, and the plate 7 is placed in posi, tion between the leaves. The strip 9 is also placed in position. l
'The positioning of the strengthenlng members 7 9, relatively to the members 5, 6, may be accomplished either by hand or by machinery, as'desired.`
After the glue is applied and the metallic parts` positioned, the device as a whole 'is subjected to pressure as before, and allowed to dry preferably under pressure. f
y' In the form of my. device shown linFi 3, I add the reinforcing strip 9, and in a dition I provide another reinforcing strlp 11, having a pair of downwardly sloplng portions 12, each provided with a beveled end 13. This additional member 11 is made as before, of sheet metal, preferably steel. With the exception of the addition of the reinforcing strip 11 the parts are substantially the same as above described with reference to Fi 2. l,
In ig. 4l I show still another form of m device. Two leaves, 14, 15 made of car board or pasteboard, cut or stamped out, in
the form shown, and also provided, prefers ably at the same time, each with a slot 18. Between the members 14, are a pair-of reinforcing strips 16, 17 each madeof thin sheet metal, preferably steel.
Disposed also between the two leaves, 14.
15 is a reinforcing member 9, made of metal.
15 of the leaves 14, 15 are also curved, the curvature being somewhat sharper than that of the lower edges of these parts.
A suspension hook 21, of the form shown in Fig. 4 or of any other form convenient for the purpose, may be used for suspending any one of the devices shown in the drawing.
The various forms of my device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, may be used substantially alike for the purpose of a coat hanger-tliat is, as a device upon which coats and vests, or equivalent garments, are to be suspended.
With the form shown in Fig. 4, however, the device may also be used as a pants hanger.l For this purpose the pants are simply'thrust through the slot 18, so as to leave about one-half of the garment upon each side of the hanger. This done the coat` or coat and vest, as the case may be, all may t be readily hung upon the device so as to depend from the top edge thereof.
It is 'to be understood that while I mention certain materials as preferable to use in the construction of the different forms of my device, any equivalent material or other ma- 'terial suitable for the purpose may be emp loyed. While the reinforcing strips are ordinarily made of sheet metal, they'may in Sonie instances be made of Celluloid, horn. thin wood, or even of tough paper, pasteboard, cardboard, or cuttings of papier mch.
Similarly the leaves may be made of practically any kind of board or Hat material generally used as an equivalent for cardboard or pasteboard, or may be even made `)f various textile substances or any of the materials above mentioned in connection with the composition of the reinforcing members.
ln the forms shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it is desirable that the reinforcing members should not overlap each other, as this would cause the material to be thicker at one point than at another. lf the device be carefully and properly made, it may have, to all practical intents and purposes, a substantially,
uniform thickness throughout.
l do not limit myself to the precise shape shown for any particular part, as variations may be made therefrom without departing from my invention, the scope of which is commensurate with my claims.
l claiml. A garment hanger, comprising a pair of leaves of sheet material adhering together face to face. and a reinforcing member sandwiched therebetween, said reinforcing member bein a plate of sheet material, said plate and sai leaves being provided with holes ai registry with each other.
*2. garment hanger as set forth in claim 1. having in addition a strip of strengthening material located betweenthe leaves of sheet material.
'3. A garment hanger as stated in claim 1, having in addition, a plurality of reinforcmg strips sandwiched in between the leaves, and spaced apart.
4. f garment hanger having the structure stated in claim 1, and in addition provided with a slot, and with a metallic reinforcing iiiiember extending partially around sai s ot.
5. A device of the character described, comprisin a pair of leaves of sheet material disposed ace to face and held together by an adhesive, said leaves bein provided with a slot, and a metallic rein orcing member sandwiched in between said leaves, and bent `iartly around said slot.
