APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14, 1920.

JULIUS J. STROMIBERG, OF BUFFALO, MINNESOTA.
ADJUSTABLE WAGON-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Application filed February 14, 1920. Serial No. 358,640.
To all whom it may concern: 7 7
Be it known that I, JULIUS J. SrnoMnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of \Vright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Wagon- Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for wagons and the object is to provide a detachable device whereby a wagon may be quickly converted into either a stock rack or a basket and hay rack. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a wagon box equipped with my improved attachment.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a wagon equipped with my device.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 3-3 in ig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 4& in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view as seen when looking in the direction of the arrow 5'in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view as seen when looking in the direction of the arrow 6 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 7 designates an ordinary or if so desired a specially constructed wagon box having sides 8 and end piece 9, adapted to be used for customary purposes. It is often found desirable however to use a wagon for other purposes such as hauling catt e, hay or baskets and crates, and for this purpose I provide a quickly detachable and adjust able frame consisting of detachable end sections 10 and side sections 11. The end sections 10 are secured in a rigid position. The side sections each consists preferably of three horizontal slats 11 and 12, the former of which are secured to series of braces 13 which are pivoted at their inner ends to brackets 14, and the latter being secured to levers 15 pivotally connected to the outer ends of said braces 13. The lower ends of the levers 15 are pivotally connected to links 16 which have their upper ends pivotally connected to U -shaped pieces 17 which are slidably positioned on the braces 13 and are retained thereon by space bars 18, said pieces 17 having flanges engaging the upper edges of said bars 18. The pieces 1.7 are connected at 17 by links 19 to the lower part of the brackets 14C. The brackets 14- consist of single pieces of material having hooks at their upper ends adapted to engage the top edge of the wagon sides 8 and having their lower ends adapted to engage in straps 20. A small finger lever 21 is pivoted to each brace 13 and is adapted to simultaneously engage a notch 22 in the adjacent bracket 14.- and a fixed finger 28 on the link 19 when the side frame is adjusted to the vertical position, as shown in Fig. 6 and to the left in Figs. 1 and 2. When the side sections are in this position they can be further secured at the ends to the end sections 10 by means of angular finger catches 24 which are slidably and pivotally secured to said end sections.
In the operation of the device, if it is desired to haul baskets, crates or hay on the wagon the brackets 14:, to which are secured the side sections, are put in place on the wagon sides, with said side sections in the lowered positions as shown in Fig. 3 and on the right in Figs. 1 and 2. But if cattle or hogs or other animals or materials are to be carried the end sections are inserted and the side sections are raised up to the vertical positions where they may be secured by means of the finger catches 21 and 24.
Having now fully shown and described my invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a wagon box, of
brackets adapted to be secured to the sides thereof, braces pivotally secured to said brackets and adapted to be swung to vertical and substantially horizontal positions, levers pivotally secured to the outer ends of said braces, pivot pieces slidably mounted on said braces, links connecting said pivot pieces to said levers, links connecting said pivot pieces to the lower part of said brackets, horizontal slats secured to said braces and said lovers.
2. In combination with a wagon box, of brackets adapted to be secured to the sides thereof, braces pivotally secured to said brackets and adapted to be swung to vertical and substantially horizontal positions, levers pivotally secured to the outer endsbf said braces and means for actuating said levers as said braces are swung, horizontal slats secured to said braces and to said levers.
3. In combination with a wagon box, of brackets having notches in their upper ends adapted to be secured to the sides thereof, braces pivotally secured to said brackets and adapted to be swung to vertical and substantially horizontal positions, links pivotally secured at their lower ends to said brackets and adapted to support said braces at their upper ends, catches on said links, finger levers mounted on said braces, said levers being adapted to engage said notches and said catches when said braces are in vertical 10 position.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
