MOLLIE L. GROSSMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOILET ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25,1921.
Application filed November 13, 1920. Serial No. 423,986.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MOLLIE L. (irROSSMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New Yorkand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The invention pertains to a novel combined handkerchief and specially held and concealed powder-puff.
The purpose of the invention is to provide an improved combined handkerchief and powder-puff so constructed and arranged that the powder-puff is concealed within the handkerchief and may only be used for applying powder to' the face through the fabric of the handkerchief.
One object of the invention is to provide a. combined handkerchief and powder-puff permitting the use of the powder-puff without the puff touching the face, the powder in this instance being applied through the int'erstices of the handkerchief and the handkerchief protecting the powder-puff from contact with the face; It is well known that the presence of dust on a persons face soon soils a powder-pufi, and in accordance with my invention the powder-puff does not be come soiled either from the face or hands, the puff being entirely concealed within a pocket formed as a permanent part of the handkerchief. The powder-pufi may be applied to and removed from the handkerchief at will, and hence the handkerchief maybe laundried as frequently as may be required and according to usual methods.
The present invent-ion constitutes a further improvement on the invention made the subject of Letters Patent granted to me February 10, 1920, No. 1,330,372 for improvements in toilet articles.
One purpose of the present invention is to provide a novel form of pocket in connection with the handkerchief for receiving and concealing the powder-puff, the present invention dispensing with some of the features disclosed in my aforesaid Letters Patent and providing an improved structure.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top View, partly broken away, of a handkerchief equipped with a powder-puff holding receptacle or pocket and a powder-puff therein, the whole embracing the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of aportion of the same, taken on the dotted line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detached top view of the powder-puff ready for application to the pocket of the handkerchief, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly cut away, of the handkerchief and its pocket inclosing a Jowder-pufhthe opening in the pocket not eing, in this instance, provided with means for fastening its two edges together, such fastening means not being necessary in every instance. a
In the drawings 10 designates the handkerchief, and 11 the powder-puff, which is a well-known commercial article and usually formed of wool and having a piece of ribbon 12 at the upper side thereof for convenience in dipping the puff into or against toilet powder.
The handkerchief 10 is of the usual fine texture employed in the manufacture of ladies handkerchiefs, and upon the face of this handkerchief I secure, by sewing or otherwise, a disk 13 of textile fabric, said sewing extending along the edges of the disk so as to leave a pocket 15 between the disk and the fabric of the handkerchief. The disk 13 may correspond in texture with thatof the handkerchief 10, and is formed with a. central slit 14 which constitutes a narrow elongated mouth to the pocket 15, which finally receives and conceals the puff 11. The slit or opening 14 referably does not extend entirely across tie disk 13, and the fabric of the .disk 13 receives button-hole stitching 16 along the edges of the slit 14 .to so increase the strength of the fabric thereat that the puff may be repeatedly inserted into and removed from the pocket 15 without undue wear upon the fabric of the disk 13. The button-hole stitching along the edges of the slit or mouth 14 also serves to prevent the fabric at the edges of the slit or mouth from rolling back and fraying out and materially aids in keeping the slit or mouth 14 firmly closed or substantially so when the puff 11 is within the pocket 15. One purpose of the present invention is the provision of improved means for holding and concealing the puff 11, the handkerchief 10 concealing the powder-carrying face of the puff and the disk 13 the other face thereof. In my aforesaid Letters Patent I illustrate the use of a draw-string for closing a pocket formed entirely terial, over the puff. n accordance with my present invention there is no puckering or drawing or disfigurement of the handkerchief further than that the handkerchief is bulged outwardly in the outline of the puff,
but is not drawn upwardly over the upper face or back of the puff. One purpose of the present invention is to leave the handkerchief 10 as nearly as may be in its natural shape and condition, and this result is accomplished in the provision oft-he'disk 13 having the slit or opening 14 and normally lying fiat upon the fabric of the handkerchief. The present invention simplifies my former construction shown in my aforesaid Letters Patent and improves the character of the article in many respects.
The puff 11 may be very readily inserted into the-pocket 15 by doubling the same over when passing the puff into and through the slit or opening 14 and then allowing the puff to flatten out or regain its normal shape, and when desired I willprovide the edges of the slit or opening 14 V with a ribbon or the like 17 by which the said slit or opening .may be fastened in closed position by tying said ribbon across the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I do not limit my invention in everyinstance to the presence of the ribbon 17 or other means for fastening the pocket in closed condition, and hence in Fig. 4 I illustrate.
my invention without means for securing the pocket closed. I find that the pocket 15 will remain in substantially closed condition and securely hold the powder-puff without the aid of added securin means.
I preferably so insert the puff 11 within the pocket 15 that the ribbon 12 carried by the puff extends lengthwise below and closes the slit or opening 14, thereby increasing the protection to the pufi' against becoming soiled. When the ribbon 12 is below the slit or mouth 14, the ribbon also tends to prevent powder 7 from sifting out through ,said slit or mouth.
The powder-puff will be inserted into the pocket 15 in such manner that'the face of the puff carrying the powder will be against the bottom of the pocket 15 and against the -.fabric of the handkerchief 10, and in the I use of; the article the handkerchief, at the by handkerchief mapowder may be applied to ones face without necessarily attracting the attention of others.
What I claim as my invention'and desire to secure byLetters-Patent, is:
1. As a new "article of -manufacture, a handkerchief of textile 'material of fine mesh through which toilet powder may be caused to pass, provided with a powderpufi' and a pocket for inclosing the same, said pocket being formed by sewing a piece of fabric at its edges to the handkerchief so as to form between itself and the body of the handkerchief the pocket for the puff and said pocket having a slit across it to form a narrow elongated mouth through which the puff may be introduced into and removed from said pocket, and said pocket concealing both. faces of the pufl", whereby the powder-carrying face of the puff may be concealed against and used'through the material of the handkerchief.
2. As a new article of .manufacture, a handkerchief of textile material of fine mesh through which toilet powder may be caused to pass, provided with a powderpuff and a pocket for inclosing the same, said pocket being formed by sewing a piece of fabric at its edges to the handkerchief so as to form between itself and the body of the handkerchief the pocket for thepuff be introduced into and removed from said pocket, and saidpockethaving means for fastening said .mouth' closed and being adapted to conceal both faces of the puff whereby the powder-carrying face of the puff may be concealed against and used through the fabric; of the handkerchief.
Signed at New Yorkcity, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 11th day of November, A. D. 1920.
