AUTOMOBILE-SIGNAL CASING.
'Application filed June 5, 1920.
T 0 all whome't may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GoLns'rnI-N, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a newand Improved Automobile-Signal Casing, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to signals for vehicles and more particularly for motor-driven vehicles and specially has reference to a signal to indicate to a vehicle in the rear the direction the vehicle in front is about to take in turning; as well as a stop signal. a I f The general object of the invention is to provide a signal of the indicated character improved in various particulars with respect to convenience with which access may be had to parts for examination, repair, or renewal, and to provide a signal that will be visible to those approaching at an angle as well as those directly in front or in the rear. I
The nature of the invention and its distinctive features and its advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of -'tlie invention.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a signal embodying-my invention; a
Fig. 2 is' an enlarged longitudinal vertlcal section as indicated by the line 2 -52,
Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is a horizontai section on the line Fig. 4; is a transverse vertical section on the line it-'41, Fig. 3;v
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rezontal section at the pivot of the hinged side of the casing;
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic view of a circuit that may be employed for the several signal areas.
in carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a casing Specification of Letters Patent. t t 5, 1921,
Serial No. 386,752.
10 is provided, having means to support it on a fixed part of the vehicle, there being shown for the purpose a yoke 11 secured to the casing, at one end, as by screws 11*, and having a bracket arm 12 clamped by a stud 13 on said yoke and a nut 14, said bracket having means to secure it to a fixed part of the vehicle as for example, said bracket arm may have a clamp 15 engageable with the frame a of the wind shield A.
The sides of the casing 11 converge to ward the outer end so that the casing is generally of triangular form in horizontal section and said sides have transpicuous signal means, such as glass or equivalent panels 17 held by removable frames 18,here shown as having holes 18 to receive fastening screws. The glass panels may embody suitable signal legends or symbols, there being shown the word stop in one .panel and reverse arrows at the other panels. The glass panels may be transparent and have the word stop painted or otherwise produced in color, indicated as at 17, or there may be openings 17 of arrow-shape or the like inthe sides of the casing and colored glass panels be employed at said openings. vergent, it will be obvious that the signal panels will be visible to persons approach-' ing at an angle to the front or back of thevehicle as well as to those approaching directly from the front or rear.
One side 19 of the casing is swingably mounted for which purpose it may have one end as at 19 in Fig. 7 curved inwardly to overlap the curved inner end 16 of the opposite fixed side 16 and be provided with top and bottom hinge flanges 19 secured With the sides con-.
as by rivets 19 to the casing 10 at the top and bottom. Said hinged side '19 has at one end, see Fig. 8, an inturned lip 20 sufiiciently resilient to be forced into frictional engagement with the adjacent broad end of the casing 10 or other means to provide for holding the hinged side in closed position.
lVithin the casing 10 I provide a removable partition structure 21 having the top and bottom parallel and generally of triangular shape to conform to the shape of the casing 10 whereby to divide the easing into a plurality of substantially closed light chambers so that the lighting means in one chamber will not illuminate an adjacent chamber or chambers. Said structure 21 has a vertical member 22 between the top and bottom and accommodated between the convergent ends of the frames 18, while adjacent to the opposite end is a vertical member 23 having the inner edge-24 thereof cut out to approximately conform to one side of the lamp socket B, there being one of said lamp sockets in each lighting chamber to receive lamps C, The edges of the top and bottom plates of the partition structure 21 project beyond the standard 23 and are removably receivable between the separated flanges of adjacent angle member bars 26 on the casing at the interior, said flanges constituting guides for the top and bottom plates in inserting and removing said plates.
By the described arrangement, by opening the movable side 19, a particular glass panel 17 may be renewed by removing a frame 18,'and convenient access to all the lamps may be had by removing the partition structure 21.
In practice any suitable switch E may be employed in the circuit to control the respective lamps C pertaining to the respective signal panels 7.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as de fined in the appended claims.
Having claim 1. An automobile signal casing, substantially triangular in horizontal section to present sides convergent toward one end, transpicuous signal panels on said sides, a removable partition structure presenting top and bottom plates generally of triangular form, members rigidly connecting said top and bottom plates of the partition structure, fixed guide means in the casing slid-ably receiving said partition structure, said partition structure dividing the casing into separate compartments, and means to iluminate the respective compartments.
2. An automobile signal casing presenting sides convergent toward an end of the casing, one of said sides being swingably mounted, transpicuous panels on said sides, frames removably secured to said sides and retaining said panels, and a removable partition structure dividing said casing into separate compartments, said partition structure presenting top and bottom plates as well as vertical members between the plates adjacent to the ends, one of the said vertical members being accommodated between the convergent ends of the casing sides to be held therebetween and there being guide members on the casing at the opposite end, slidably accommodating the top and bottom plates of the partition structure; together with means to illuminate said compartments.
