The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a central sectional view of the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine or the like, the latter embodying the invention and other parts usually associated with the crank shaft. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the gear pum proper and the relief valve, taken on t e line 2- 2 of Fig. 1. Fi 3v is an end view of the parts shown in l ig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 and taken on the line d-l of Fig. Fig. 5 is a side view of the parts shown in Fig.

pipe 15 leading to the oil pump 16, the latter being shown mounted upon the shaft 11and secured to the crankcase. Forwardly on said shaft and suitably secured thereon, as by a key 17 is a sprocketwheel 18 the same driving a sprocket chain 19. liositioned above said crank shaft is a. second shaft 20, commonly known as a cam shaft, for drivlng the timing mechanism 21 and a fan, not shown, by means of' a sprocket chain 22. The cam shaft is driven by the sprocket chain in any suitable manner. Communicating with said pump and operatively associated therewith is an outlet 23, said outlet communicating with suitable conduits 24: by which the engineis lubricated. Herein the bearing 12 is shown provided with an opening 25, the same communicating with one of the conduits 24 for lubricating said bearing, thebearing being herein shown supported by a suitable bracket 26.
The detailed construction of the pumping gear 29 and the idle gear 30. The driv- .ing gear 29 is shown secured'to the crank shaft 11 by a key 31, whereby said gear is driven directly by said crank shaft.
.The pump housing 16 is also provided with an inlet channel and port 32, the same communicating with the suction. supply pi e 15, and a discharge port and channel 33, the latter communicating with the outlet 23.
Herein the'pump 16 is shownprovided witha cover 34:, the same being suitably secured thereto, as by bolts 35. As shown in Fig. 6, the idle gear 30 is rotatably mounted in the housing 16 upon a hollow shaft 36, said housing also being provided with bushings 37 in which said shaft may rotate.
The gear pump is herein shown provided with a relief valve, the body portion 38 communicating with the discharge outlet 33 and being secured thereto in any suitable manner, such as by the screw threaded connection'39, as shown in Fig. i. The screw threaded connection herein is shown provided with a valve seat 40. Adjacent thereto and within the bod portion 38 is a ball relief valve 41. Slida la in said body por tion and normally engaging said ball upon contact, the lower end of said spring being secured upon the seat 43 of the follower, as described. A cap 47 is herein shown suitably secured in the body portion 38 by being screwed therein, and said cap isprovided with a threaded central opening 48 in which the screw 44 is mounted. The screw 44 carries on its upper end a lock nut 49, the same locking the screw 44 in the adjusted position to the cap 47 A relief chamber 50 within the body portion of said relief valve discharges directly intothe front compartment of the engine. An outwardly extending discharging nipple 51, the'same being provided with dis charge ports 52, is included within the pressure system adjacent said relief valve in any suitable manner. Said discharge nipple projects forwardly over said pump and into the sprocket chain 19 above the sprocket wheel 18 to discharge oil over and upon the chain for lubricating the same.
The invention claimed is:
In an internal combustion engine the combination of a crank shaft thereof, a gear pump comprising a pair of meshin gears, and having one of said gears rigid with said crank shaft for rotation therewith, and a lubricating system connected with said pump for supplying lubricant to said englue.
2. In an internal combustion engine the combination of a crank shaft thereof, a gear pump comprising a pair of meshing gears, and having one of said gears rigid with said crank shaft for rotation therewith, and a relief valve for said pump discharging adjacent said shaft for lubricating other mechanism associated with said shaft.
3. In an internal combustion engine the combination with a crank shaft, and a gear pump operable by the shaft, of a lubricating system for supplying lubricant to said engine, and a discharge nipple positioned upon said pump to communicate with said pump independently of said lubricating system for discharging lubricant upon mechanism associated with said shaft, said nipple projecting forwardly of said pump.
