To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL fioANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county ofPiatt and State ofIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storm-Tops for Automobiles, and I do hereby declarethefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of ref+ erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in storm tops for automobiles and consists of a simple and efiicient device of this nature, so arranged that it may be easily and quickly applied to the top, and affording means whereby the windows of the top may be opened or removed.

The invention comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature having other various details of construction combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended'claim.

' My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automobile showing-the application of my storm top thereto.

Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on .line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;

Fig. 3 is a view in elevation showing a portion taken from the inside of the top.

Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the top.

Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing the relative movements of the hinged door and a hinged slide section in which a window is mounted, and

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:

bile and 2 the bows thereof. The storm top consists of a frame 3, the base portion thereof being provided with slots 4 forming guide ways in which the windows 5 are adapted to slide. The upper portion of said frame is also "provided with similar slides for the reception of the windows. To pernnt the windows to be removed from the 7 frame 3.

The lower portion of the frame of the storm top has portions 11 which are hinged as at 12 to the bottom part of the frame, each portion 11 being positioned over and adapted to move with the usual hinged door 13 of the automobile body. Each hinged section 11 has a slot 14. therein, through which a bar or rod 15, secured to the door, passes, said bar tending to hold the part 11 upon the door as it swings upon its hinges.

It will be noted that when the door is swung open the part 11 will have a sliding movement independent of the door, for the reason that the part 11 and the door 13 have independent hinges. This sliding movement of the part 11 and 13 is shown by dotted lines in the detail sections of the drawings. Hooks 17 are fastened upon the upper portion of the frame and are adapted to engage eyes upon the bows to further assist in securely holding the top to the automobile.

At the forward end of the frame, a board 21 is fastened over the upper portion of the wind shield and serves to prevent rain or snow. from entering the space intervening between the upper window of the wind shield and the top of the frame when the window is lowered a short distance.

WVhen the top is adjusted in place in the manner shown and described, it will be with the hinged grooved part of the irame,

the frame, after which the door may swing the latter and the door having'ind'ependent sliding movements.

By the provision of a storm top embody ing the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and eflicient means is provided which may be quickly and easily applied to the top of an automobile and which will inclose the entire top making the car comfortable for riding in cold or stormy weather The apparatus is so adjusted in place that itcan be easily applied without marring the car, and quickly removed when desired. o What I claim to be new is:
