Description
0 UNITED STATES.
PATENTWOFFICE.
HUGH s. PooTE, on Prr'rsBunen, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD CHEMI- cAL COMPANY, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
ALLOY.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH S. Focus, 2. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alloys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in steel alloys, one object of the invention being to produce an alloy which shall have high static and dynamic strength, ductility and hardness without possessing the quality of so-called high-speed steel used in the manufacture of cutting tools, .but which shall be eminently eificient when employed for making such devices as automobile gears and springs, light armor, plate, rivet sets and other articles which are required to possess hi h static and dynamic strength,
,ductility and hardness and which do not have to perform functions of edged tools.
With this and other subjects in view, the invention consists in an alloy as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The ingredients which I employ alloyed with steel and the relative approximate proportions of said ingredients in the finished Per cent. Carbon 0.10 to 0.60 Uranium 0.20 to 1.00 Manganese 0.50 to 0.60 NickeLi 2.00 to 3.50 Silicon 0.55 to 2.00 Phosphorus .03.
Sulfur Trace.
In making my improved steel alloy I may Application filed September 29, 1920.
Serial No. 413,526.
first melt, in an electric furnace, a quantity of steel turnings under a slag of lime and iron scale and then slag and refine the metal under a basic carbid slag. The alloying elements manganese, nickel and silicon are added in the furnace,'the manganese and silicon thus added being inthe form of ferromanganese and ferro-silicon, and the uranium in the form of ferr0uranium.may be added in the ladle.
My improved steel alloy, while not possessing the quality of so-called high-speed steel for use in making edged tools, it does possess in a very high degree, qualities of static and dynamic strength, ductility and hardness which render it eminently efiicient and useful for the manufacture of such articles, for example, as automobile gears, light armor plate, rivet sets, etc.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. An alloy consisting of steel having alloyed therewith, uranium, silicon and nickel in the proportions substantially as specified.
2. The herein described uranium-siliconickel-steel alloy having uranium, silicon and nickel alloyed in the relative proporing witnesses. v
HUGH S. FOOTE.
