To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses 1G; SHACKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at L nn, in the county of Essex and State of lllXI-SSfiCllllSGttS, have invented certain Improvements in Counter-Pinking Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to cutting machines and is herein illustrated as'embodied in a machine for pinking the edge of a blank, such as a counter, for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
In the lasting of a shoe the margin of the rear portion of. the u} )per,.includingthe margin of the counter, is wiped over the margin of the heel portion of the insole. Because of the curve of the upper at this point a certain; amount of surplus material results, and the thicker the counter the more the surplus material. In order to facilitate the wiping operation and. to get rid of a certain amount of the surplus material, it is desir ableat times, particularly when very heavy counters arebeing used, to pink the lower edge of the counter; and the general object of the present invention is to provide a machine for performing this and similar operations.
It is desirable that the pinking should be produced not along the entire lower edge of the counter, but only along the middle portionof the edge Where the curvature of the counter when in place in the shoe is sharp,
and that the location of the pinking'cuts be accurate and uniform. Accordingly the illustrative machine is provided with a cutting bed, a pinking cutter, and means for positioning a blank widthwise and lengthwise to cause the pinking of the selected edge to be done accurately. In the illustra' tive machine the positioningmeans takes the form of? end gages which are adjustable in unison equally in opposite directions and a back gage which a is adjustable: widthwise of the blank, the latter gage contacting with the blank at two separated. points located on opposite sides of. the cutteim With such a machine'blanksof different shapes and sizes may be pinked with accuracy and rapidity.

said lever being connected at one end by a pinand-slot connection 13 to the frame of the machine and at the opposite end by a pivot 15 to a trcadle rod 17 This rod is normally held up by a spring (not shown) but may be pulled down into the position shown by depressing the treadle. Fast to the upper portion of the rod is a carrier 19 having at its rear portion a yoke 21 which embraces a vertical guide 23 formed on the frame of the machine, and mounted in the carrier are a plurality of pinkingtools 24, three being shown arranged side by side. By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the middle tool has formed on its lower end one pinking cutter and that, of the end tools, each has formed thereon two pinking cutters. The stem of each tool has at its upper end a cylindrical portion which fits in a bore in the carrier 19 andis held in position by a set screw 25. Threaded into the carrier above the tools are three adjusting screws 27 having lock nuts 29 thereon. With this construction the tools 24: may be adjusted independently and held firmly in adjusted and-left screw 35 which-isirotatable in bear-" ings inthe frame ofthe machine but held from longitudinal movement. Each end gagelhas at its rear end a yoke 37 which embraces a guide 39, this construction serving to. guide thegages and to prevent them from: A
turning. In order to position the blank widthwise upon the bed there is provided a back gage 41 which slides forward and back in a dove-tailed groove cut in the frame of the machine. An adjusting screw i held from movement with respect to the frame of the machine, is threaded into this back gage; and a set screw d5, passing freely through a slot in the gage and threaded into the frame, furnishes means for holding the gage in adjusted position. This has two downwardly extending fingers 14:1 arrr ed on opposite sides of the pinking cutters and adapted thus to engage the edge of the blank at two separate localities equidistant from the cutters. A gage of this shape is paiticularly adapted for counters and similar blanks having more or less pointed ends and curved edges. By making the back with two separated fingers, the blank is held from turning about a vertical axis, and at the same time blanks the eiglges of which have differently curved contours ma y readily be positioned.
In the operation 01 the machine, the gages are first set by placing a counter upon the bed, turning the screw 35 until the end gages 33 contact with the ends of the counter, and turning the screw 43 until the counter is properly located widthwise. Thereafter all the counters of that size and style may be rapidly pinked by presenting them one at a time and manipulating the treadle-rod 1'7. When a lot of counters of a different shape or size are to be operated upon, the gages are again adjusted.
Although the invention has been set "forth as embodied in a particular machine, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine which has been shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a cutting bed, a cutter, means for causing relative movement of approach between the bed and cutter, and means for positioning a blank on the bed, said positioning means comprising gages ar ranged to contact with the ends of the blank, and a gage arranged to contact with an intermediate portion of the blank, means whereby the end gages may be adjusted relatively in opposite directions, and means whereby the other gage may be adj ustcd in a path at an angle to that of the end gages.
2. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a cutting bed, a cutter, means for causing relative movement of approach between the bed and cutter, and means for positioning a blank on the bed, said last-named means comprising enc means for adjusting them simultaneously and equally in opposite directions, a back gage shaped to contact with the blank :u'. separated points. and means for ndjl the back gage in a path a 1 an angle to that ol? the end gages.
3. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a cutting bed, a rcciprd catory carrier, a plurality of piuking tools mounted in the carrier. and means for positioning a stiffener blank on the bed, said positioning means comprising end gages adjustable in unison equally in onposite directions to locate the blank lengthwise substantially medially of the tools, and a back fill lilll gage comprising two spaced fingers located on opposite sides of the tools adjustable to cause the cutters to pink the edge of the blank.
8. A counter pinking machine, having in combination, a cutting bed, a pinkin g cutter, a gage for positioning a counter widthwise and a pair of gages for positioning the counter lengthwise with respect to the cutter, mechanism for moving the gages of said pair equally in opposite directions and means for causing relative movement of approach between the bed and cutter to pink the edge of the counter.
9. A counter pinking machine, having in combination, a cutting bed, a plurality of pinking cutters, and means for positioning a counter on the bed, said positioning means comprising end gages adjustable in unison equally in opposite directions and maintained always substantially equidistant from the cutters and a back gage adjustable at an angle to the direction of adjustment of the end gages, said back gage having two fingers also substantially equidistant from the cutters.
