PRINTING-PRESS DELIVERY MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18, 1921.
Application filed June 3, 1916. SerialNo. 101,458.
useful Improvements in Printing-Press Delivery Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object ofthe invention are the provision in a printing press of constructional features by means of which the printed sheet may vbe delivered printed side up on a verticallyadjusted piling table, which lattermi movable lnto and out of operativeposition to receive the sheet from the impression cylinder-and to afford access to working parts of the mechanism. at the de liveryside of the press;also the provision of an auxiliary delivery whereby, at will and as occasion may arise, the pressman is en abled to divert one or more sheets and effect delivery of the same: to a convenient point for inspection to determine propernregistry, uniformity of inking, andiothe r facts necessary to the production of a perfect printed product.
In order that the invention maybe read-- ily understood a preferred embodiment of the same in one form of offset press is set forth in the accompanying drawings and in the following detailed description based thereon. Obviously the invention is susceptible of embodiment in 'other and varied constructional forms to adapt the same to the circumstances of use, wherefore it will be understood that the description and draw ings are to be taken in an illustrative rather than in an unnecessarily limiting sense. In the draWings;- i
Figure 1 a general side elevational view of a press embodying the features of the invention Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the press with the side frame removed to. show the operating mechanism for the auxiliary delivery; and
Fig. 3 is an endiview of the'press broken away in a central portion.
Herein the press proper is indicated generally at 1 1, equippedwith the ink fountain at 12, the ink distributing rolls 13, the water fountain 1 1, the plate cylinder 15, blanket cylinder 16, the impression cylinder 1.7, the feed board 18, deliverymechanism 19, the
piling table .20 and its carriage 21. The parts thus far referred to form nopart of the present invention and need not be described in more detail.
. N omal sheet deli very.
The sheet fed to the press at 18 istaken by the, grippers 22 on the impression cylinderand carried thereby in contact with. and rcceivingit impression from the blanket cylinder 16. It is delivered by the grippers 22 to one of the grippers 23 carried by the delivery chains 19 around the sprockets 2st, 24 By the grippers 23the sheet is carried faceldown along the upper ,reach ,of said chain 19 beneath the suction hood 25Qand in the old and well known manner is held thereby with its printed face out of contact with the chains 19 in order to. prevent smutting. It is carried by the grippers 23 around the sprocket 24 beneath, the hood 26 and over the suction device .27, which latter exercises a restraining action upon the trailing portion of the sheet until it is released by the grippers 23 immediately over the piling table 20, upon which table the sheets build up a pile the top sheet of which is maintained in substantially constant relation to the delivery chain by the gradual lowering of the table until full. The construc tion and operation of the suction restraining mcchanisnir is; that disclosed in patents to Henderson No. 1,156,903, and; Stevens No. 1,156,940, dated October 19, 1915, and the construction and operation of the piling table is that disclosed in the patent to Rich, No. 1,145,921, dated July 13, 1915.
The characteristic feature of the present invention is the manner of mounting the piling table and delivery mechanism, above described, in such manner as to arrange for themoving of the same away from the press proper in order to give access to theworking part of the press at thc delivery side thereof. 7 To this end the piling table 20 is suspended from a carriage 21which also serves as a mounting for the sprockets 24, 24" of the delivery mechanism. The carriage 21 travels by means of rollersindicated at Q Supon suitable tracks on a horizontal frame 31, supportedat one end upon the frame of the printing-press and at the other end upon standards 32. The standards and frame carry pillow blocks 31 Within which is journaled a shaft 32, provided with a hand wheel 33, and having fixed thereon a pinion 34 in mesh with a rack 35 on the carriage.
It will be obvious that by the rotation of the hand wheel 33 the carriage with its burden of delivery mechanism and piling table may be moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that indicated in dotted lines in said figure, the full line position being the normal operative position and the dotted line position being that with the delivery mechanism and table removed from the press in order to give access thereto. The removal of the piling table and delivery mechanism in this manner provides a passageway and space for a workman between the press and the said delivery mechanism and piling table without the necessity of having an extension delivery at a considerable elevation in order to provide this accessibility.
AuaziZia-ry sheet delivery.
In printing presses of this general type it has been proposed to take the sheet from the impression cylinder and deliver the same at that side of the press opposite the feed board in which delivered position the top sheet would be exposed to view by the pressman and the quality of the work could be inspected "from time to time. An objection to this mode of delivery is that the sheets are delivered in a position near the floor and where they would be in the way 01' the pressmanfinvolving the carrying away of the printed sheets at frequent intervals. In order to provide for a piling table with a wide range of vertical movement adapted to accommodate a large number of sheets and to permit the same to be carried away by a truck in large quantities, it has been "found desirable to deliver the sheets as previously described on the same side of the press as the feed board, but this has necessitated frequent trips by the pressman to the delivery table in order to inspect the work. In order to combine the advantages of a piling table placed beneath the feed board and at the same time to facilitate inspection of the sheets when desired, the present arrangement is designed.
In addition to the normal delivery at the feed side of the press, by means of the grippers traveling around the cylinder or sprocket 24 an auxiliar T delivery cylinder 36 is provided for delivering sheets for inspection upon the table 37. To control this auxiliary delivery, the following mechanism is provided: On the end of the blanket cylinder 16 is formed a cam groove 38 for traverse by a roller 39 carried by one arm 40 of an angle lever fulcrumed at ll and having another arm 42. This arm 42 has fixed thereon a stud 43 which plays within a slot 4:4: of a link bar 45. Upon this link bar 45 is pivoted at 4:6 a latch 4:7 adapt ed to hook over the stud d?) and lock the lever arm 4-2 and the link bar 4-5 together. The opposite end of the link bar 4-5 is pivoted at 48 to an arm 48 connected to the e "entric shall: 50 which acts upon the hem ings of the auxiliary cylinder ie to move the same bodily toward and from the impression cylinder 17. An arm 51, extending be yond the eccentric 50 has a lateral. cam face adapted to bear against the stud pin 52 and project the same into the path of the grippers 22 carried by the impression qvlindcr.
A lever 53 fastened to eccentric shaft 5 has a slide link 5% pivoted at 55 and sliding in 56. Link 57 is connected at 58 to in; at one end and to 55) on the cam (50 at the other end, which cam is in the path oi the gripper operating lever 61..
The ope 'ation is as follows: It the pressman desires to inspect a sheet upon the table 37 he pulls the hand lever 62 and thereby drops the latch eiT into engagement with the stud 43 causing the link bar 45 to partake of the motion of the lever arm 4-2 shifting the eccentric shaft 50 to bring the auxiliary cylinder 36 into operative engagement with the impression cylinder 17 and permit its grippers O3 to take the sheet therefrom, the stud pin having been projected into the path oi the grippers 22 to actuate the latter to release the sheet as it is taken by the grippers 68.
The lever 53 which is fastened to eccentric shaft 50 moves the slide link to the left causing the cam 60 through the link 57 to advance to a position to close the grippers (ill on the sheet the instant the grippers release it from the impression cylinder. The reverse movement oi? the lever (32 restores the auxiliary cylinder 36 to a position where it will not take the sheet roin the impression cylinder 17 but permit the same to be carried to its position oi normal dclivcrv (o the grippers :13, as previously ('lcscrihed.
