UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON IBETTIGOLE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BROOM.
Application filed January 29, 1920. Serial 110.354,?83.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SIMON BE'r'ricoLu, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view of a broom con structed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, a side View of the same.
Fig. 3, a face View partly in elevation and partly in section of my improved broom with the handle removed, and on a larger scale than shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4, a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
This invention relates to an improvement in brooms such as are commonly used for household purposes, the object of the invention being to produce a broom which dispenses with the use of broom-straw; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a head 5 of wood or other suitable material with which the usual handles 6 may be connected. The head 5 corresponds in form to the usual head of a broom, and secured to opposite sides thereof is a series of metal. strips 7 arranged to diverge from the head so as to assume the form of an ordinary broom. These metal strips are secured to a sheet 8 of pasteboard or other suitable material which will tend to hold the spring strips in their divergent position. I then inclose the strips and positioning material within a casing 9 of burlap, canvas, or other suitable material, which incloses the bottom of the strips and is connected to the head so as to be ermanently secured in place.
he broom thus formed is manipulated in the usual manner and when the outer covering becomes worn, it may be readily replaced. Brooms thus formed can be produced cheaper than brooms of ordinary construction, and as the metal strips will not wear out, the broom can be used indefinitely by replacing the outer covering.
I claim:
A broom having a head, a handle therefor, a plurality of independently yielding metal strips having their upper ends applied directly to the said head in divergent arrangement to form a skeleton broom-shaped body in which their lower ends are spaced apart, and fabric applied over the said strips and inclosing the same, whereby the said skeleton broom-shaped body is adapted for the independent fiexure of its corners and the localized transverse flexure of its lower edge as well as fiatwise fiexnre as a whole.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
