Description

0. L. NEWSOM.
TRACK TOOL.
APPLICATION m'w APR. 3, I920.
1,365,265. Patented Jan. 11.1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR-Ll NEWSOM, OF FITZGERALD, GEORGIA.
TRACK-TOOL.
Application filed April 3, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. NEWSOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitzgerald, in the county of Ben Hill, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Track-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway tools.
One object of-the present invention is to provide a novel and improved tool with which bent splice bars, fishplates, friction plates, rails, and the like can be easily and quickly straightened.
Another object is to provide a tool of this character which is strong and durable, and which is simple in construction and easyto operate.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool in operative relation to a railway rail and the plate being straightened.
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, through the foot block, showing the means for detachably securing the same to the lever of the tool.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of a railway rail, 11 the ties, and 12 the bent plate to be straightened by the tool.
The tool comprises a long and tapering lever having ratchet teeth 14, on its upper edge midway of its length, the lever being represented by the numeral 13. The wider end of the lever is formed with an apertured lug 15, on its upper portion to which pivotally connected the L-shaped jaw 16. This jaw cooperates with the fixed jaw 17 carried by the lower portion of the wider end of the lever. Extending vertically from the jaw 16 is a post 18 to which is pivotally con:

upper edge of the pawl 19. Secured to the lower edge of the lever, at a point between the fixed jaw 17 and the standards 21, is a foot block 24 which is adapted to be brought to bear on the bent plate to be straightened, as clearly seen in the drawing, while the jaws 16 and 17 grip the tread portion of the rail 10. It will be noted that the plate to be straightened is placed across the ends of the ties, outwardly of the rail.
The pawls serve to hold the jaws in firm engagement with the railway rail while force is applied downwardly on the smaller end of the lever. The foot block is thus forced against the convex portion of the bend of the plate and said bend pressed down and the plate properly straightened.
The foot block has a dowel pin 25 which engages in an opening 26 in the lower edge of the lever, whereby the block can be removed when not needed.
What is claimed is:
A bending and straightening tool comprising a power lever having teeth on its upper edge face, a fixed jaw on one end of the lever, a movable jaw carried by the end of the lever for cooperation with the fixed jaw to grip a portion of a railway rail, a pawl connected with and movable by the movable jaw and engaging the teeth of the lever, said pawl being provided with teeth, a pawl supported on the lever over the first pawl and engaging the teeth of said first pawl, and a removable foot block carried by the lower edge portion of the lever for bending engagement with a piece of work to be straightened.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR L. vNEWSOM.
