A further object is to provide a simple construction in which one of the side walls of the suitcase may be extended from the other to constitute the said table surface and which when collapsed presents the appearance of an ordinary suitcase.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of the device showing it in extended position to constitute a table.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing it collapsed to form a suitcase.

As here shown my improved device comprises the flanged cover member 1' which is hinged in the usual manner on one side to the rectangular edge wall 2 and is adapted to be secured to thesaid edge wall by the usual lock 3 and clasps 4, a handle 5 being provided adjacent the lock 3 as is common. This member 1 forms the cover of the suitcase when the device is so used, and forms the base of the device when in use a table.

The side wall of the suitcase opposite to the cover 1 is formed by a movable member or panel 6. When the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 this member is carried on the upper ends of a'series of telescopic posts extending upwardly from the corners of the edge wall and each made up of a lower section 7 and an extensible upper section 8, the lower section having a reduced tongue 9 on its upper end which projects into the forked lower end of the upper section. These four posts are each hinged to'the edge wall at their lower ends as indicated at 12. These posts are also hinged at their upper ends to the member 6-, the hingepins of the posts at one end, in the drawings the left hand end, passing through the angular offsets 8 on the upper ends of the posts, these orfsets extending in an outward longitudinal direction. When in its extended position the member 6 is braced by the inclined rods 13 which are hinged at their lower ends in eyes 14. carried by the edge walls and have hooked upper ends adapted to take into eyes 15 on the member 6 spaced a short distance on opposite sides of the transverse center line thereof, these rods preferably being of equal length to the suitcase. Then in its collapsed position the member 6 is secured against outward displacement by means of straps 16 on the ends thelrieof engaging the buckles 17011 the edge wa The manner of changing my improved device from one position to the other is as follows: Assuming the device to be extended to form a table as in Fig. 1 it is collapsed by firstremoving the hooked ends of the rods 13 from the eyes 15 in the table member 6. The ends of each rod may then be hooked into the eye 14 on which the other red is hinged, the two rods thus extending side by side from one end to the other of the suitcase.

The posts 7 and 8 are then swung downwardly longitudinally of the device, or to the right, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, until they are flush with the top edge of the rectangular edge wall 2, one end of which is cut away slightly as at 2 to permit of this movement. The posts are then extended until the end of the member 6 registers with the end of the suitcase body and the member 6 finally swung backward or in a left hand direction, turning on the end of the suitcase as a pivotal axis until it registers with the rectangular edge wall and forms the bottom of the suitcase, being secured in place by the straps 16. To extend the device to form a table the above sequence of operations is reversed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

l. A combination suitcase and table comprising a suitcase body, telescopic legs hinged at their lower ends to the corners of said suitcase body, a member hinged at its upper end to the upper ends of said legs, and adapted to form either a table or a side of the suitcase, a pair of rods of equal length with the suitcase hinged at their lower ends to respective ends of the suitcase body, said rods being adapted to incline upwardly and inwardly and be detachably connected to the said member to brace the latter, and means whereby said member may be moved from a table forming position to a position completing the suitcase without disengagement of the said legs with either said member or the suitcase body.

2. A combination suitcase and table comprising a suitcase body, telescopic legs hinged at their lower ends to the corners of said suitcase body, a member hinged at its upper end to the upper ends of said legs, and adapted to form either a table or a side of the suitcase, a pair of rods of equal length with the suitcase hinged at their lower ends to respective ends of the suitcase body, said rods being adapted to incline upwardly and inwardly and be detachably connected to the said member to brace the latter, and means whereby said member may be moved. from a table forming position to a position completing the suitcase without disengagement of the said legs with either said member or the suitcase body, said means including longitudinal angular offsets on the upper ends of the legs at one end of the suitcaseto which offsets the said member is pivoted.
