CENTRIFUGAL rUMr.
Application filed November 19, 1919. Serial'No. 339,213.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, KUNT O. MJoLsNEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashwauk, in the county of Itasca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal lPumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in centrifugal pumps, and the invention has for its object to provide mechanism in connec tion with pumps of the character specified, for permitting the pump to be repaired when it becomes worn, without requiring eX- tensive operations on the pump, merely by removing the worn portion and substituting a new portion.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the casing with the upper half removed,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the upper end of Fig. 1, p F Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of ig. 1, f
Fig. 4 is a side view, with parts broken away.
In the present embodiment ofthe invention, the impeller 1 is secured to a shaft 2, which is journaled in bearings in the casing or housing, consisting of the upper section 3fL and the lower section 3. The casing or housing has an annular passage at the periphery of the impeller, the said passage gradually increasing in diameter from the intake end 4 thereof to the outlet end 5 thereof.
Thrust rings 7 are arranged on the hub 6 of the impeller on each side of the same, and the water driven by the pump is taken in through the hubs and discharged by the impeller varies into annularpassage 4-5 to its final discharge. Asis known, the edge of the annular passage becomes worn, after a time depending upon the nature of the liquid handled by the pump, and the liquid instead of taking the prper course, will eddy about the pump center. To prevent this, I place resistance plates 8 Within the housing to conform to the curves and lines of annular passage 4, the impeller, etc.
These plates which are arranged on the opposite sides of the impeller have their inner ends and sides shaped to it the contour of the hub, thrust rings, and impeller surfaces, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. kTheir K Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan; 11, 1921. l i
outer ends are shaped to conform to the contour of annular passage 4, and their outer edges are straight. ranged in rabbets 9 in the housing 3, so that their upper faces are flush with the upper face of the housing section, and they are held in place by screws 10 which are countersunk in the plates to be flush with the upper face thereof. n v
As shown more clearly in Fig. 2, the plates at their outer ends and at their inner edges have lugs 11 which extend toward each other, at the peripheraly surface of the` impeller. These plates are formed from flat sheet steel, and will vary inshape to con These plates are ar-` form to the design of various pumps. They prevent wear, being of resistant material and when worn, they may be easily removed and replaced by new plates. In practice, the
plates need be not more than g to of an inch in thickness. v In the improved pump the water is draw .in through the inlet 12 to the axis of the impeller and is forced outwardly by the rota, tion of thek impeller to the annular passage of the casing 3-3f The rotation of the im peller and the force of the water coming from behind drives the water around the annular passage and out at thev outlet 13. When the casing B-Ba becomes worn the liquid, instead of lling the annular passage to the outlet 13, will merely eddy, or turn around the impeller hub. The plates remedy this, for they prevent .eddies and churningof the liquid. The purpose of the lugs 11 is to more clearly define the annular passage and the impeller chamber. The plates' 8 act in the same manner as delectors, con straining the liquid to flow outwardly substantially radial to the casing 3--3a tothe annular passage.
I claim In a centrifugal lpump, the combination with the housing having the impeller chamber and the annular passage outside of the impeller chamber and communicating therewith, the impeller in the chamber and the shaft to which it is secured journaled in the housing, of resistance plates arranged adj acent to the intake end of the annular passage, said plates being arranged on opposite q sides of the mpeller chamber andbeng eX- tended in from the Walls theieof toward the mpellel' and having their inner edges shaped to nt closely up to elle sides of the mpeller, each plate having a lug extending inwardly toward the opposite plate at the peripheral surface of the mpeller and partially separating and denng the annular passage from the rnpeller chamber, said plates `being detachable for `the purpose 10 specified. p
