SIGNALING SYSTEM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY S. WILBUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyndhurst, in the county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signaling Systems, of which the following. is. a full, clear, concise, and eXact description.
This invention relates to signaling systems and more particularly to such systems in which signal-receiving devices, connected with a line are responsive to currents of two different strengths.
In signaling systems of this character it is often found desirable to limit the length of time that current of the greater strength is connected to the-line and it is therefore an object of this invention to provide a system in which this result is accomplished.
For a more complete understanding of this invention, reference should be had to the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating one embodiment thereof.
In the drawing there is shown one end of an ordinary duplex telegraph line equipped with apparatus for carrying out they purpose of this invention. The other end of the telegraph line is similarly equipped.
As is usual in telegraph systems of this character, the line 5 forms one leg of the Wheatstone bridge balanced by a second leg in the form of an artificial line whose electrical characteristics are similar to those of the telegraph line. The other two legs of the bridge are composed of impedance coils 8 and 9, while a polarized Morse telegraph relay 12 is bridged across the points I B and C of the bridge for controlling the usual telegraph signal.
Point A of the bridge is connected to the armature of a relay 10 controlled by the usual Morse telegraph key 11. Depending upon the energized or de'e'nergized condi tion of the relay 10, telegraph battery 17 of one polarity or telegraph battery 16 of the opposite polarity is connected to the telegraph line 5.
The means for increasing the strength of the current connected with the line 5 and for limiting the length of time such cur-' tery 17 causes an increased flow of current over the line. The signal receiving device connected with the line which is responsive to the increased flow of current is in the form of arelay 15 connected in parallel with the Morse telegraphrelay 121 through a normally closed contact 30 of switch 20. This relay 15 cooperates with relays 21xand 22 to control a lamp signal 23 and a buzzer 24:. Relay 21 is normally energized and keeps the circuit of the lamp 23 and the relay 22 opcn. This signal may be considered as suitable for call-signal service whereby the attention of anoperator or attendant may be obtained at either a way or terminal station orat 'a telegraph. repeater station at which'the call-signal equipment may be located.
When the apparatus is in its normal condition, as shown in the drawing, the actuation of the telegraph key 11 at one end causes the operation of the relay 10 controlled thereby, which. connects the battery 17 of negative polarity to the line, thereupon causing a flow of current through the polarized relay 12 on-the other endto actuate the telegraph signal. Whenever it is desired to light the lamp 23 and operate the buzzer 24 at the other end ofthe line, the attendant at the originating end operates the switch 20, thereby opening the contact 30 and closing the contact 31. The subsequent depression of the telegraph key 11 energizes the relay 10 as before described and in addition causes the energization of the relay 7 over a circuit from battery through key 11, contact 31 of switch 20, resistance 32, left-hand normal contact of relay 18, left-hand normal contact and winding of relay? to ground. Relay 7, in operating, connects the battery 19 in series with the line 5 and removes the resistance coil 6 therefrom, whereby an increased flow of current over the line is obtained. Relay 7, in operating, also establishes a temporary locking circuit for itself from battery through resistance 33, left-hand alternate contact and winding of relay 7 to ground, and opens its initial energizing circuit. The closure of the. middle alternate contact of the relay 7 causes the energization of relay 18 which in operating establishes a locking circuit for itself through its right-hand alternate contact, Opens a contact inthe initial energizing circuit of relay 7, and in closing its contact 34 establishes a short circuit about the winding of relay 7 which thereupon releases its armatures. Relay 7 in releasing connects the resistance coil 6 in series with the line and removes the battery 19 therefrom. Relay 18 in looking up maintains the energizing circuit of relay? open, so that the battery 19 cannot again be connected in the line until the contact 35 in the locking circuit of relay 18 is opened.
Relay 15 at the other end of the line responds to the impulse of current of increased strength and in so doing opens the energizing circuit of relay 21. Relay 21 thereupon releases, establishing a short circuit about its winding which includes its left-hand contact and the contact of key 36, so that upon the release of relay 15, relay 21 will not be energized. The release of the relay 21 also causes the lighting of the lamp 23 and the operation of relay 22. Relay 22 in operating causes the continued operation of the buzzer 2 1 until the relay 21 is again energized upon the subsequent operation of the switch 36 to open the contact thereof and consequently the short circuit about the winding of relay 21.
Relays 7 and 18 are relatively fast operating so that by causing the energization of relay 7 when the key 11 is actuated and the release of this relay 7 upon the energization of relay 18, the battery 19 is connected with the line 5 at the same time as battery 1". The poling of these batteries is such that when connected. with the line at the same time they aid. Battery 19 does not remain connected with the line upon the cessation of the impulse of current from the battery 17, so that the line is normal when battery 16 is connected thereto upon the release of relay 10. In this way, the possibility of false operation of the apparatus connected with the line is reduced to a minimum, and an effective system is provided in which ad ditional signaling devices may be controlled over a telegraph line.
What is claimed is:
1. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a signal receiving device connected therewith, a source of current, a key actuated to connect the source of current with the line for operating the signal receiving device, a switch controlled independently of said key, an electromagnet energized upon the actuation of the key when the switch is operated, means responsive to the energiza tion of the electromagnet to increase the flow of current over the line, and a second signal receiving device responsive to the increased flow of current.
2. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a signal receiving device connected therewith, a source of current, a key actuated to connect the source of current with the line for operating the signal receiving device, a second source of current, a switch, a relay responsive to the actuation of the key when the switch is operated to connect the second source of current with the line for a predetermined length of time, and a second signal receiving device responsive to the increased flow of current resultsecond source of current from the line, and
a second signal receiving device responsive to the increased flow of current resulting from the simultaneous connection of the two sources of current with the line.
4. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a signal receiving device con nected therewith, a source of current, a key actuated to connect a source of current with the line for operating the signal receiving device, a second source of current, a switch. a relay responsive to the actuation of the key when the switch is operated to connect the second source of current with the line, a second relay energized upon the response of the first relay to cause the release thereof, thereby to disconnect the second source of current from the line, a locking circuit for the second relay completed upon energization thereof, and a second signal receiving device responsive to the increased flow of current resulting from the simultaneous connection of the two sources of current with the line. i
5. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a signal receiving device connected therewith, a source of current, a key actuated to connect a source of current with the line for operating the signal receiving device, a second source of current, a switch, a relay responsive to the actuation of the key when the switch is operated to connect the second source of current with the line, a temporary locking circuit for the relay established upon the energization thereof, a second relay energized upon the response of the first relay to open a contact in the initial operating circuit of the first relay, a short circuit for the first relay established upon the energization of the second relay to cause the release of the first relay, thereby disconnecting the second source of current from the line, and a second signal receiving device connected with the line responsive to the increased flow of current resulting from the simultaneous connection of the two sources of current with the line.
6. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a signal receiving device connected therewith, a source of current, a key actuated to connect a source of current with the line for operating the signal receiving device, a second source of current, a switch, a relay responsive to the actuation of the key when the switch is operated to connect the second source of current with the line, a temporary locking circuit for the relay established upon the energization thereof, a second relay energized upon the response of the first relay to open a contact in the initial operating circuit of the first relay, a short circuit for the first relay established upon the energization of the second relay to cause the release of the first relay, thereby disconnecting the second source of current from the line, a locking circuit for the second relay established upon the energization thereof, and a second signal receiving device connected with the line responsive to the increased flow of current resulting from the simultaneous connection of the two sources of current with the line.
7. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a source of current, a key, a relay operating upon the actuation of the key to connect the source of current with the line circuit, a second relay energized upon the operation of the first relay to cause the release thereof and the disconnection of the source of current from the line circuit, and a signal receiving device connected with the line circuit and actuated while the source of current is connected with the line.
8. In a signaling system, in combination, a line circuit, a source of current, a key, a relay operating upon the actuation of the key to connect the source of current with the line circuit, a second relay energized upon the operation of the first relay, to cause the release thereof and the disconnection of the source of current from the line circuit, a locking circuit for the second relay established upon the energization thereof for removing both relays from control of the key, and a signal receiving device actuated while the source of current is connected with the line.
9. I11 a telegraph system, a line circuit, transmitting means for controlling energizations of said line circuit, relay means, switching means to render said relay means responsive to the operation of said transmitting means, means controlled by said relay means for modifying the potential of predetermined ones of said line energizations, signal receiving means local to said transmitting means, and means controlled by said switching means for disabling said signal .receiving means.
10. In a telegraph system, a station, a line circuit extending therefrom, means for applying signaling currents of predetermined strength to said line circuit, means for increasing the strength of predetermined ones of said signaling currents, switching means at said station for either enabling or disabling said means for increasing the strength of said signaling currents with respect to control by said means for applying signaling currents to said line, receiving means at said station, and means controlled by said switching means for disabling said receiving means.
11. In a telegraph system, a line circuit, transmitting means for controlling energizations of said line circuit, a resistance connected serially in said line circuit, relay means, switching means to render said relay means either enabled or disabled with re spect to its responding to the operation of said transmitting means, and a source of current substitutable for said resistance through the control of said relay means.
12. In a telegraph system, a resistance, a line circuit connected through said resistance, a source of current, a relay for substituting said source of current for said resistance, means including other sources of current for the transmission of telegraphic signals over said line circuit, switching means to either enable or disable said relay with respect to its control by said means for transmitting signals over said line circuit, receiving means local to said means for the transmission of telegraphic signals over said line, and means controlled by said switching means for disabling said receiving means.
13. In a telegraph system, a line circuit, transmitting means including sources of current and means for applying currents of positive and negative polarities from said sources to said line, relay means, switching means to enable the operation of said relay means through control of said transmitting means in applying a predetermined one of said polarities from said sources of current to said line circuit, an additional source of current, and circuits controlled in the operation of said relay means to apply said additional source of current to act accumulatively with the current of said predetermined potential and to disconnect said additional source of current independently of the control of said transmitting means.
