PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR CHARLES TWIGG, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
WORK-TABLE FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH HAND-PRESSES.
Application filed April 4, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR CHARLES Twice, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 5763 Moseley Rd, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ivork l ables for Use in Connection with Hand-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a work table which will admit of slotting, shaping or like cutting operations being carried out in a hand-operated screw press.
The invention consists in the combination with a hand-press of a work-table comprising a compound slide-rest mounted upon a base plate adapted to be attached to the bed of the press, and having superimposed traversing and cross slides, of which the upper slide carries vise jaws or like workclamping means.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a side elevation showing the application of the work-table or compound slide-rest to a hand-press in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the invention showing the feed screws arranged at the sides of the respective slides, and in which the work-table is adapted to be retated by hand. I
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line w'of Fig. 2.
The vise or work-holder comprises a base plate 1 adapted to be secured to the bed of the hand-operated screw press 2 and provided with a shank 3 by which it is positioned upon the said bed.
This base plate 1 is provided upon its upper face with a longitudinally movable slide 4 moving upon a dovetail guide rib 5 (integral with the said base plate) parallel to the front of the press bed, the necessary movement being imparted to the slide by means of a feed-screw 6' arranged at the side of the slide, said screw 6 turning in end bearings 17, 17 upon the base plate 1 and passing through a nut 18 fixed to the side face of the slide 4.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4,1921.
Serial No. 287,418.
Similarly a cross-slide 8 is moved upon the transverse guide rib 7 of the slide 4 by means of an outside feed-screw 9' mounted in bearings 19 upon the said slide 4 and passing through a nut 20 fixed to the slide 8. This arrangement reduces the depth of the vise, enabling it to be applied to presses having a short stroke. The cross-slide 8 may be fitted with a rotary work table adapted to be rotated by hand,as shown. Thus, the table 10 rotates about a pivot 11 on the cross-slide 8 and turns within a circular opening in a plate 21 adapted to be secured by bolts 29 to the slide 8. This plate has an overhanging flange 22 engaging the edge of the top face of the table 10, as shown in Fig. 2, thus serving to hold the table in position. The said table is provided in its top face with grooves 23 to receive the heads of adjustable bolts 24 which pass through slots 25 of a top plate 26 which is fixed to the table 10 by screws 27. The work is adapted to be held down on to the plate 26 by adjustable jaws or clamping pieces 28 Fig. 2) through which the bolts 24 pass.
y loosening the bolts 29 the table can be rotated by hand into any desired position.
Various forms of attachments or workholding devices may be fixed to the table to suit the kind of work that is being operated upon.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a hand-operated screw-press, of a work table adapted to admit of slotting, shaping and like cutting operations being effected with the press, said work table comprising a compound slide-rest attached to the bed of the press having superimposed traversing and cross slides, work clamping means carried by the upper slide, and external feed screws situated at the sides of the respective slides for actuating both the said slides.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR CHARLES TWIGG.
