Description

L. H. MORRIS.
WRENCH.
APPUCATION FILED SEPT- I9, 1919.

Znuenar Lfi Mar/7L2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS H. MORRIS; OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
WRENCH.
T 0 all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS H. Mourns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to jar openers and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device for obtaining a firm grip upon the threaded closures of jars, bottles and the like, so that the same can be readily and quickly removed without injuring either the receptacle or closure.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved jar wrench, which can be adjusted to various sizes, so that a firm grip may be obtained on threaded caps of different sizes so that the same may be readily unthreaded from a bottle or jar neck.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved jar wrench embodying a pair of handle members having their outer terminals adjustably connected together so as to permit the handle members to be readily secured to a bottle or jar cap.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which is durable and efiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench showing the same applied to an ordinary preserving jar.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved jar wrench which includes a pair of handle members 2 and 3, each of which is identical in construction and includes the arcuate portion forming jaw members 4 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 19, 1919. Serial No. 324,932.
which are adapted to engage the outer surface of the threaded cap 5 of the ordinary or any preferred type of fruit jar 6. The jaw members 4 have projecting forwardly therefrom straight hand grips 7 suitably thickened as at 8, so that a firm grip may be obtained on the same. The opposite terminals of the jaw members 4 are provided with outwardly extending ears 9 which lie in substantially the same plane as the hand grip members 7 and these ears are provided with slots 10 which loosely receive the adjusting bolt 11, the head 12 of which engages the outer face of one of the ears 9. The shank of the bolt is threaded, as at 12', and has turned thereon the thumb or wing nut 14, which is adapted to engage the outer face of the opposite ear and provides means whereby the jaw members may be adjusted toward or away from each other so as to bring the same into or out of engagement with a jar cap. The inner faces of the jar members 4 have secured thereto rubber pads 15 or the like, which are adapted to engage the outer surface of the threaded cap so that a firm grip may be obtained thereon and to also provide a resilient means for enga 'ng the cap so as to prevent slipping thereo In operation of the improved device, the jaws 4 are applied to the opposite sides of the cap and the thumb nut 14 is adjusted so as to bring the ears toward each other and the jaw members 4 into engagement with the cap. The hand grips 7 are then firmly grasped by the hand of the user and owing to t e means for pivoting the ears on the bolt a certain swinging movement of the jaws is permitted on the bolt, which permits a strong pressure to be applied to the jar cap. The same is then rotated in the desired direction, and the cap is removed.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an improved jar opener is provided which will effectively and quickly permit jar closures to be threaded from jar necks.
In practice, I have found that the form of my inventionillustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
What I claim as new is:
o A jar Wrench comprising jaw members of identical design and dimension, the members being provided between their ends with arcuate sections, the end portions of the members in alinement with each other, a
10 bolt passing through and adjustably held in one end portion of the members, and handle grips mounted upon the outer surfaces of the other end portions of the members.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS H. MORRIS.
