Description

E. I. DODDS.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV.25, i919.
Patented Jan 4, 1921.
I00 ll.
ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PF.l\TNSYLVANI i Mi a ASSIGNOR T FLANNERY IBOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYIBOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed November 25, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, the object of the invention being to provide a bearing member passing through the opening in the boiler sheet and projecting above the same, so that the inner end of said bearing member shall engage the inner face of the boiler sheet, and to support said bearing member by means of a cap or closure engaging the outer end thereof and clamp onto the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View partly in elevation showing 'an embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a modification.
1 represents the outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet, with which latter a staybolt 3 is connected in any suitable manner and the outer end of this staybolt is provided with a head 4 which is connected with the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter explained.
The outer boiler sheet 1 is provided with an opening .5, the wall of which may be straight and cylindrical. Around this opening, the sheet 1 is provided in its outer face with an annular groove or recess 6 for the reception of a gasket 7 A hearing sleeve 8 having a cylindrical exterior contour passes through the opening 5 and is provided at its inner end with a shoulder 9 to abut a ainst the inner face of the boiler sheet 1. he bearing member 8 is provided interiorly near its inner end with a rounded seat 10, on which the head 4 of the staybolt is mounted. The outer end 01'- tion of the bearing member, which pro ects outwardly beyond the outer face of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. at, 1921.
Serial No. 340,490.
boiler sheet 1, is threaded externally, as at 11, and enters a cap or closure 12 which is threaded internally to receive the exterior threaded portion of said bearing member. The inner edge of the cap or closure 12 seats on the gasket 7 and by turning said cap or closure, the same will be caused to press firmly against the gasket 7 and the bearing member will be caused to tend to move outwardly and insure firm engagement of the shoulder 9 with the inner face of the boiler sheet 1.
By the construction above described the bearing member will be held tightly in place to resist the inward pull of the staybolt and the cap or closure Wlll cover the open outer end of the bearing member and a sufiiciently tight connection between said cap or closure and the boiler sheet will be effected to prevent leakage.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 2, the bearing member 8 may be rounded somewhat near its inner end to provide the internal seat 10 for the head of the staybolt and the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet 1 will be shaped to conform to the contour of said bearing member. The cap or closure may be provided with an angular peripheral portion 13 to receive a wrench.
In both forms of the invention. the bearing member may be slotted as at 14: to facilitate the slight collapsing of the inner end portion of the bearing member to permit the assembling of the same in the boiler sheet.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tors-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member passing through said opening and outwardly beyond the same, said bearing member having a part to engage the inner portion of the boiler sheet and having its outer end threaded externally, a cap or closure receiving the threaded end of the bearing member and cooperating with the boiler sheet to hold thebearing member in place, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing member.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member passing through said opening and having a shoulder to engage the inner face of the boiler sheet, said bearing member projecting beyond the outer face of the holler sheet and having an external threaded part, a cap or closure surrounding the threaded part of the bearing ing beyond the outer face of the boiler sheet and threaded externally, a cap or closure over the end of the bearing member and having an internally threaded part engaging the threaded part of the bearing member, a gasket interposed between said cap or closure and the boiler sheet, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing member.
in testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing Witness.
ETHAN I. DODDS. lVitness:
