BOOT-POLISH-IBOX HOLDER.
eeaeor Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed January 5, 1920. Serial No. 349,501.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT LANGFORD MorLn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Cheriton, Kilmorey Gardens, St. Margarets, London, S. England, civil engineer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boot-Polish-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined holder and cover for receiving and retaining open boot polish boxes or tins and the like so as to protect the contents thereof while holding same readily available for exposure when required for use, of the kind comprising a box *ith a hinged lid and provided with resilient means for gripping the open tin. A suitable manner of carrying my invention into effect is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichl igure l is a plan view of the holder with the cover closed.
*ig. 2 a vertical section on the line aa of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 8 a plan view with the cover open.
The combined holder and cover may be made of thin sheet metal or other suitable material and consists of a base plate 1, with an upwardly projecting portion 2 on one side thereof to which the cover 3 is hinged, while an upwardly projecting portion 4: at a diametrically opposite point is fitted with a spring clip 5 to engage the free end of such cover to retain it in its closed position, and allow same to be turned back on its hinge when released.
The base plate 1 with the projections 2 and l constitute a shallow open box or tray to receive the tin it has to retain and protect, and for the purpose of lightness the cover 3 hinged thereto, as shown, instead of being circular is preferably composed of a strip only of suitable 'idth extending across from side to side of such box or tray.
To the base plate 1 of the box or tray a sprin 6 is applied of a diameter to receive and partially encircle and hold in position the uncovered tin 12 when the edge of same has been inserted in an inclined position between the arms thereof and forced down so as to separate them sufficiently to allow the tin to enter.
The spring 6 is preferably provided at its center with a bottom horizontal tang or blade 7 which is passed under a tongue 8 stamped up from the base plate 1 by the formation of two transverse slits therein, and which while retaining the spring in position permits of the shifting thereof forward or backward to accommodate tins of varying diameter within certain limits, while retaining them centrally upon the base plate 1.
A bow-shaped blade spring 9 is secured at one end to the cover 3 and is free to slide under pressure at its other end. A metal plate 10, preferably in the form of a disk, is centrally secured by a rivet 9 or otherwise to the bowed portion of said spring and is adapted to oscillate vertically and laterally by reason of the yielding of the spring. This plate carries a pad 11 of leather or other suitable material and serves as a stiffener therefor. When the cover 3 is turned down this pad comes in contact with the upper edge of the open tin box supported on the base plate 1 and containing the blacking, and closes said box and protects the contents thereof, the spring 9 affording the necessary pressure to insure tightness and the connection therewith of the pad supporting plate permits the pad to adapt its position to suit tins of varying heights or shapes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combined holder and cover for boot polish tins and the like comprising a shallow box or tray with a hinged cover, means for securing such cover in the closed position, a spring clip mounted on the base plate of the box or tray to receive and hold the tin, and a spring pad oscillatably mounted upon the under side of the hinged cover and adapted to bear upon the open top of such tin when in the closed position, substantially as specified.
2. The combined holder and cover for boot polish tins and the like comprising a shallow box or tray with a hinged cover, means for securing such cover in the closed position, and a spring clip of partially circular form and with a tang or blade at its base in the middle of its length and engaging beneath a tongue formed in the base plate of the box or tray, leaving the extremities of the spring free to open out, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT LANGFORD MOYLE.
