Beit knownthat I, GEORGE S. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bay Shore, inthe county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Heaters' for Automobiles, of
which the following is a full, clear, anderract description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved heater for, automobiles and other power driven vehicles located within the hoodv adjacent the internal com- 1 bustionengine. to heat the latter with la view to preventthe waterof the cooling system from freezing and to keep the heater and connected parts in proper condition for readily starting the motor whenever it is desired to do so.
. Another object is to enable the operator in charge of the automobile to readily light Ithe heater.
Another object is'to provide a heater that can be safely used.
Another object is to require no attention on the lpart of the operator to start the heater from the dashboard and without opening the hood.
With these andother objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features` Fig 2 is an enlarged sectional side eleva;
tion of the heater.
The heater `10 for heating the Vinternal combustion engine 11 of an automobile 12v is arranged within the hood 13, and the heater is preferably in the form of a safety lamp of the Davy or similar type. The lamp 'comprises a casing .15 provided at the bottom with anv airinlet screen 1 6 and having at -the top a chimney 17 above which is arranged a `conical hood or deflector 18 for deflecting the products of combustion downg small end to the top of the casing .15. Within the casing 15 is arranged' a burner, preferably in the form of an annular wick holder 2O closed at the bottom and adapted to contain a cylindrical wick 21. The lower end of the wickholder 20 is provided with a tube 22 screwing on the innerend of a boss 23 formed on one side of the casing 15.
with one end of a supply-pipe 24 provided 'with a shut-off valve 25 and connected with The outer end of the boss 23 is connected the oat chamber of va carbureter 26 of the internal combustion engine 11. The carbureter26 is connected by the usual supply pipe 27 with the gasolenetank of the automobile for supplying gasolene or other liquid fuel to the carbureter 26. The heater 10 is arranged in such relation to carbureter .27 that the level of the liquid fuel within the float chamber `of the carbureter 27 isv about midway of the height of the wickholder 20, as indicated bythe dotted line in Fig. 2. By the arrangement described the wick 2 1 is charged with gasolene from the gasolene supp y of the internal combustion engine -11 and an overflow of gasolene in the wick holde'r 20 is prevented.
In order tolight the lamp, .use is made of a spark plug 30 of any approved construction and screwing in a boss 31 of the casing 15. The spark gap 32 of the spark plug 30 'is arranged adjacent the upper end of the wick holder 20 so as to light the lamp whenever it is desired to use the heater. spark plug 30 is 'connected by a wire 35 connected with the electric ignition system of the internal combustion engine 11, and the said wire 35 is provided with a switch 36,
