Description

G. S. SHAW.
BABY CARRIAGE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNESO. 1919.

UNETE BABY-CARRIAGE.
Application filed June 30,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STANLEY SHAW, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Baby- Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in baby carriages, with more particular reference to the handle thereof, where such handle is adapted to be used either for wheeling the carriage or for carrying it, and the object of my invention is to devise a handle by means of which, when it is in the carrying position the carriage can be carried at arms length, that is to say, the gripping portion of the handle is then below the waist line and thus the carriage may be carried more conveniently and with greater ease than when the gripping portion is normally above the waist line, as in such carriages at the present time.
I attain this object by the construct1on illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a perspective view illustrating the invention.
The frame and body of a baby carriage such as that described and claimed in my United States Patent No. 1,301,514 and dated April 22, 1919, is indicated by the dotted lines, the handle 1 being shown in full and in the carrying position. This handle, however, instead of being one piece, is formed of two side members 2 and 3, which are preferably of flat section, to the upper ends of which members are riveted or otherwise suitably secured portions 4 and 5 which are of slightly convex section, the concave face being on the inside. To the upper ends of these portions 4 and 5 the ends 6 and 7 of the upper, or gripping, end 8 of the handle are swingably connected by means of pins 9 provided with tension springs 10 to maintain the swinging connection free from slackness, the pins 9 be ingsecured into the ends 6 and 7 and projecting through holes in the ends of the portions 4 and 5 so that the springs 10 may be mounted thereon to hear at one end on the outer faces of the portions 4 and 5 and at Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920. 1919. Serial No. 307,677.
their other ends on a head 11 formed on the pins. A rounded member 12, of wood or other suitable material, is secured at the middle of the end portion 8 on the inside to form a grip for the hand when carrying the carriage.
The manner in which the invention is used Wlll be apparent on reference being had to the drawing as it will be seen that when the handle is swung from the wheeling position at the rear of the carriage to the front prior to lifting the carriage, that is, into the position shown by the full lines, the upper end 8 of the handle may be folded downward into the osition indicated by the dotted lines, when t e grip 12 will be below the waist line, enabling the carriage to be carried with great comfort and convenience.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a baby carriage, of a handle, comprising side members, reinforcing members secured to said side members, and a grip member swingingly connected to said side members for a purpose specified.
2. The combination with a baby carriage, of a handle comprising side members, one end of said members being secured to the carriage frame, the free ends of said side members having plates secured thereto, a grip member, the free ends of said grip member being swingingly connected to said reinforcing members, pin members for retaining said reinforcing members and grip member in swinging relation, and means associated with said pins to maintain the swinging connection free from slackness.
3. he combination with a baby carriage, of a handle therefor comprising side members, and a grip member connected thereto capable of being swung to a point substantially below the waist line to permit of the carriage being transported free of the ground and at arms length.
4. The combination with a baby carriage, of a foldable handle capable of being swung to a propelling position at one end of the carriage, or to a carrying position above the carriage, said handle in the latter position adapted to be foldable to dispose the grip ping portion thereof below the level of the 5. The combination with arbaby carriage,
of a foldable handle capable of being swung to a propelling position at one end of the carriage orto a carrying position above the carnage, said handle mcluding s1de memhers pivotally connected at their lower ends a to the carriage and a U-shaped gripping portion having the side arms thereof pivot- 10 ally secured between the upper ends of said side members for the purpose specified.
Dated at Vancouver B. C. this 13th day of June, 1919. r
V GEORGE STANLEY SHAW.
